Day Twenty-Seven
(Barb Bresnick appears inside a fancy hotel in Ronda, Spain.)
Barb: Ten people are now down to three. Ruri Hoshino, Tenchi Masaki, and Tomoyo Daidouji. After a twenty-six days of playing a difficult game, the three have managed to forge a friendship. Another friend of theirs, Taichi Yagami, did not play the game well enough… and we’re all happy about that… and was the last one executed. Now, the three remaining are left with the unenviable task of unmasking the Mole, and claiming the $495,000 pot. Okay… so some people would envy it.

(Shot of Tenchi, in front of a black screen.)
Tenchi: I’m still here. That’s a big deal. I think I’m on the right track in uncovering the Mole, and if I stay level, I’m right on track for winning this thing.

(Shot of Ruri, in front of a black screen.)
Ruri: Tenchi and Tomoyo are friends. I tend to keep to myself more. This could put someone at a disadvantage, but I think I’m in a position where I can turn that to their disadvantage.

(Shot of Tomoyo, in front of a black screen)
Tomoyo: It’s hard to say at this point whether the Mole would be more active or less active. The Mole’s trying to sabotage and outwit at the same time, but can the Mole risk more sabotage if everybody knows who it is? It’s part of the mind game.

(Shot of Ruri, in front of a screen.)
Ruri: We’re all pretty friendly at this point, but with everything going on, the bonds are weakening. You can’t look at almost $500,000, then at two opponents, and call them friends. It doesn’t work that way.

(Shot of Tenchi, in front of the screen.)
Tenchi: It’s about the money. As much as we say we’re friends, the money is the driving force now. At this point, anybody could turn on anyone else. It’s all up for grabs.

(Shot of Tomoyo, in front of the screen, smiling.)
Tomoyo: Please check all friendships at the door- It’s time to play the game.

(Shot of them all eating breakfast together.)

Ruri: I mean, it seems you two and Taichi were close. I’m surprised he’s gone.

Tenchi: Hey, I liked him. But then again, I like you two. Everybody’s gotta lose sometime, except for the Mole… (cocky) and me.

Tomoyo:One thing’s for sure, I don’t envy the Mole’s job. Must be tough trying to fool everybody like this.

Tenchi: Yeah.

Ruri: The game isn’t over yet. One quiz determines everything. Whoever knows the most about the Mole wins. Simple as that.

(Ruri and Tomoyo eye each other for a second, then each pull notepads out of hammer space and start writing furiously.)

Tomoyo: He’s eating soft-boiled eggs on toast…

Ruri: Side of bacon and hash browns…

(In the van, Barb is preparing to drive them to their next assignment. Tomoyo is seated in back, stretching out to lie down.)

Tenchi: What are you doing?

Tomoyo: I’m tired. Too much note-taking.

Ruri: It has been a while since I got a good rest.

Tenchi: Yeah.

Assignment Eighteen
(Montejaque. Houses are lined down the streets. Barb and Manny stand with the three players.)

Manny: Okay, now you three have all gotten to know each other quite good. Not just as friends, but the execution quiz demands it. We’re going to put that knowledge of your opponents to the test for this next assignment. This test is divided into three rounds, and in each one, you’ll be asked to find a different person by using your knowledge of that person. Who would like to volunteer themselves to be the first person?

Tenchi: Uh… I’ll go.

Manny: Okay. Go with Barb, and I’ll explain to the others.

(Barb and Tenchi walk away.)

Manny: Listen up. We asked you all to answer a series of questions where you have to choose between one of the two other contestants. Your job is to determine which one of you two is the one Tenchi chose for three questions. Each question leads you a different path. Select the right path, and you find Tenchi, and earn $10,000. The first question is- if a deadly snake bit both of you and Tenchi had the antidote but could only save one of you- who would it be?

Ruri: I would say he’d give it to her.

Tomoyo: Maybe. I’m okay with that one if you are.

Ruri: Yes. We say Tomoyo.

Manny: Okay, we walk this way then.

(They walk down a particular street, and come to another junction.)

Manny: Question 2- Who would Tenchi not trust with his most confidential secret?

Ruri: Her.

Tomoyo: Me!

Manny: Okay… and we go this way…

(They walk down another street, and come to two sets of doors.)

Manny: Final question- Who would Tenchi say is more likely to lie to his face?

Tomoyo: We have to answer that?

Ruri: Her.

Tomoyo: What? Well… actually he would say that. He’s been thinking I’m the Mole since day 1.

Manny: So you say Tomoyo?

Ruri: Yeah.

Manny: Door to the right… find out if it is the correct one.

(Tomoyo goes over to the door and knocks on it.)

Tomoyo: Tenchi! Open the door so I can lie to your face!

(Some middle-aged Spanish guy opens the door.)

Spanish Guy: ¿Que?

Tomoyo: You… aren’t Tenchi, are you?

Spanish Guy: ¿Que?

Tomoyo: Manny, did we lose this one?

Manny: Si. Vosotras las perdedoras.

Spanish Guy: ¿Que?

(Shot of Manny)

Manny: This is what I get for hiring walk-ons that are only supposed to say one line.

Spanish Guy: (OS) ¿Que?

(Manny mutters for a second.)

Manny: Anyway, girls, you did not pick the right door, therefore you do not get the $10,000.

(Dissolve to show Barb and Tenchi walking in.)

Barb: Okay, the first question had Tenchi answering who he’d give the antidote to. Tenchi, who did you say?

Tenchi: I don’t know. I didn’t want to have to have to choose for all those, so I just answered them randomly.

Barb: I see. Anyway, you did say Ruri on that one, which would have led you three down the street a ways.

Tomoyo: You answered randomly?

Tenchi: Yeah… I’m not good at making decisions… especially when women are involved.

(Shot of Barb leading Tomoyo away for the next round.)
Tomoyo: (VO) The only real way you could sabotage this game was to answer the questions randomly. It ensures that the other players would not guess right.

(Manny is with Ruri and Tenchi at the beginning.)

Manny: Okay, the first question- who between Ruri and Tenchi is most likely to sneak a peek at their birthday present?

Ruri: Well… I probably wouldn’t.

Tenchi: Neither would I.. The question is what Tomoyo would say.

Ruri: Knowing her, she might say me.

Tenchi: Possibly. It’s worth a shot.

Ruri: She has a strange mind, it’s hard to predict.

Manny: So are you settling on Ruri?

Tenchi: Yes.

Manny: Swell… walk this way.

(They do so, and hit junction 2.)

Manny: Question 2- In a restaurant, who is less likely to pick up the tab?

Tenchi: We were talking about this before, weren’t we?

Ruri: Sort of… we were out eating and you picked up the tab.

Tenchi: So I guess she’d probably pick you again.

Ruri: Yeah.

Manny: Okay…

(In front of the two doors.)

Manny: And the final question- if it was the last day on Earth, who would Tomoyo rather spend the day with?

Tenchi: Uh… knowing her…

Ruri: Me.

Tenchi: I don’t know… you always were the one talking about that unholy trinity.

Ruri: Yeah, but it’s just a matter of sexual preference. Even at our ages it still affects decisions such as these.

Tenchi: So you’re saying she’d rather spend the day with me?

Ruri: No… you didn’t figure it out yet?

Tenchi: Figure what out?

(Ruri whispers in Tenchi’s ear.)

Tenchi: No way!!

Ruri: Pretty obvious if you knew what to look for.

Tenchi: Sorry, I was concentrating a little harder looking for the Mole. But… no way.

Ruri: I dare you to say she’d rather spend the day with me.

Tenchi: Fine. Sure… just to prove you wrong. Forget the ten grand.

Ruri: Okay… watch this.

(Ruri goes up to the appropriate door and opens it. Tomoyo is indeed on the other side.)

Tenchi: Oh… good deduction Ruri.

Tomoyo: (slowly) Given the question, I’d rather spend the day with somebody my own age than somebody eight years older… regardless of gender… and regardless of sexual preference. Okay?

Manny: Right… either way, congratulations, you’ve earned ten grand. Now… Barb can take Ruri away.

(Shot of Barb, leading Ruri away.)

(Shot of Tenchi and Tomoyo with Manny..)

Manny: Question 1- If Ruri could be either one of you two, who would it be?

Tenchi: Hm… I think we were talking about something like this.

Tomoyo: Yeah, didn’t she say something about envying you before?

Tenchi: I think she did.

Manny: So the answer’s Tenchi?

Tenchi: Yeah.

(Manny leads them down the "Tenchi" route.)

Manny: Next- who between you two have the fewest people at their funeral?

Tomoyo: She’d probably say me.

Tenchi: Yeah, it makes sense. There’s Ryoko, Aeka, Washu…

Tomoyo: Oh yeah. (snickers) Definitely.

Tenchi: (sly) Of course if Ruri was right about you, then…

Tomoyo: Don’t start.

(They reach the set of two doors.)

Manny: Final question- Who would be more likely to cheat on their significant other?

(Silence.)

Tenchi: Wouldn’t we need a significant other first?

Tomoyo: Yeah… I doesn’t feel right about…

Manny: Well, this is Ruri answering. Who would she say is more likely to cheat?

Tomoyo: Well… I think it’s me. I have this feeling she says all good things for Tenchi and all bad for me.

Tenchi: Well, that doesn’t mean that…

Tomoyo: It’s a matter of whether Ruri’s using strategy or not.

Tenchi: It’s Ruri… she’s always using strategy. So in that case… yeah, I’d agree.

(Tomoyo sighs as Tenchi walks up to the door and knocks. Ruri steps out. Caption- "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.")

Ruri: Did we get it?

Tenchi: Yeah.

(Ruri walks down, past Tomoyo, who’s a bit sad.)

Tenchi: Hey, Tomoyo, what’s wrong with you?

Tomoyo: Nothing. I just don’t see why you answered that way.

Ruri: Well… Tenchi’s got a million women going after him, and it looks like he’s checking them all out and thinking hard before settling on a decision. He wants to be happy with what he chooses. I think that makes sense.

Tenchi: I never thought of it that way… but I suppose. Yeah.

Tomoyo: No. That doesn’t mean anything. I just… think it’s weird that you chose me for that and the funeral question.

Ruri: I have my reasons… but we won, right? It doesn’t matter.

Tenchi: Yeah. Ten thousand dollars in the pot. The only one that shouldn’t be happy is the Mole. Right?

Tomoyo: (still a bit angry, but hiding it) Yeah, sure. Let’s go.

(Shot of them walking around. Tomoyo’s going off into a corner, followed by Tenchi. Manny goes up to Ruri.)

Manny: Well, might as well get this part done now- you three did succeed with two of your three rounds, and therefore earned $20,000, bringing the pot up to $415,000.

(Shot of Tenchi, trying to comfort Tomoyo a bit. We can’t hear what’s going on.)
Ruri: (VO) I think that this game was designed to get on your nerves, and it worked in Tomoyo’s case. She fell into the trap, and I can’t blame her one second for it. If someone was to say I’d have fewer people at my funeral or said I was likely to lie to their face, I’d be a little hurt too.

(Tenchi walks up to Ruri.)

Tenchi: I think you better go talk to her.

Ruri: Why? This was a stupid game, and I don’t know what her problem is.

Tenchi: Oh. Okay.

(Tenchi walks away. Ruri looks away.)

Ruri: Baka.

(Shot of the team, and Barb driving them to the hotel.)

Tomoyo: (VO) I guess I just got a little over-emotional about some of these answers. I’m sure that Ruri meant no harm in them, and since we did get $20,000 out of it, I suppose it’s okay.

(Shot of a fancy hotel back in Ronda that the three and Barb are checking into. Two female desk workers greet them. One has light-blue hair, only a shade darker than Ruri’s. She’s 14, and stands about 5’1". The other is Mitsune Konno [aka "Kitsune" (aka "Fox")] from Love Hina, with a full figure, very light brown hair, and "Takeshi"-eyes. They greet the three, acting as normal employees. Tomoyo turns to Barb.)

Tomoyo: You guys must be getting pretty desperate for cameos.

Barb: Uh… yeah. Girls, you may show them to their rooms.

(Kitsune smiles slyly)

Kitsune: Right! No problem! Come on, this is gonna be fun.

(The other three are a bit hesitant as Kitsune leads them upstairs. The other girl leans in towards Barb.)

Rei: Did you have to get her?

Barb: Makes this a lot more fun, doesn’t it?

Rei: I suppose.

(Kitsune leads each person to their assigned rooms, and after they enter, she locks the door behind them.)
Barb: (VO) The three contestants believe that they are just being led to a normal hotel room. Actually, this is their final test, and a way to add an additional $75,000 before calling it a night. Literally. They will have ninety minutes to get out of their rooms and meet me downstairs. Each room contains clues that will help the other three rooms. Let’s have a looksie-

(Shot of Tomoyo, looking around her room.)
Barb: (VO) Tomoyo has a TV and two videos- the movies "Psycho" and "Scream…"

(Shot of Tomoyo, watching one of the movies, curious.)
Barb: (VO) She also has a key, binoculars, and a stationary bike connected by a wire.

(Shot of Ruri, inserting a data disk into a laptop computer.)
Barb: (VO) Ever the electronic fairy, Ruri has a laptop computer, and a briefcase and refrigerator- both with combination locks.

(Shot of Tenchi’s room… completely black.)
Barb: (VO) Tenchi is in the dark.

(Through a night-vision camera, we see Tenchi, "feeling up" a xylophone and mallets.)

(They all try contacting each other through the doors, to no avail.)

(Shot of Tomoyo, who, bored, rides the stationary bike.)

(Shot of Tenchi’s room, whose walls are now covered with an eerie writing, with such gibberish as religious symbols, a listing of everybody executed like "Naru was #1, Hayama was #6, You are #8," a scribbling of who the Mole is, "Tomoyo is the Mole, Ruri is the Mole, Tenchi is the Mole…" the number "0106," and three names- "Rei Ayanami, Rei Hino, and Rei Sagami.")

(Tomoyo gets off the bike. Tenchi’s room goes black.)
Tenchi: Did somebody slip me some of Washu’s sake again?

(Tenchi gropes his way to the phone, and dials downstairs. Kitsune answers.)

Kitsune: Hola.

Tenchi: (VO) Hi, can I get the number for Ruri Hoshino’s room?

Kitsune: ¿Que?

Tenchi: (VO) Oh, shoot, I don’t suppose you speak English. Uh… ustede…

Kitsune: (VO) No, no, I suppose I have to give it to you. But it’ll cost you.

Tenchi: Cost me what?

Kitsune: (VO) If you win, I get fifty percent.

Tenchi: What? That’s extortion!

Kitsune: Do you want to speak to Ruri or not?

(Kitsune looks over at Barb. Barb shakes her head. Kitsune frowns.)

Kitsune: Never mind, she’s in room 106, hold on…

(Ruri’s phone rings. She answers it.)

Tenchi: (VO) Hello?

Ruri: Tenchi? Are you locked in your room?

Tenchi: (VO) Yeah, and I can’t see a thing. Are you in the dark?

Ruri: No.

(Shot of Tomoyo, who hangs up her phone, and dials, and gets a busy signal and hangs up and goes over to the bike again.)

(Shot of Ruri.)

Ruri: If you saw that 0106 on the wall, and that’s my room number, I’m going to try that on one of my items.

Tenchi: (VO) Hold on, my acid just kicked in again.

(Shot of Tomoyo getting off the bike.)

Tenchi: (VO) Never mind.

(Back to Ruri.)

Ruri: See anything important?

Tenchi: (VO) I saw three names- all were Reis.

Ruri: Okay. I’ll try the briefcase and maybe see if I can call Tomoyo.

(Ruri tries "0106" on the briefcase. It opens, and has a bunch of crap like a newspaper in there. Ruri quickly flips through it and finds nothing, then goes over to the phone.)

(Tomoyo searches the shower. Behind the curtain is the number "0417." She searches for a bit, and doesn’t check there. The phone rings before she finds it. Tomoyo goes to answer it.)

Tomoyo: Hello?

Ruri: Tomoyo?

Tomoyo: Ruri, I’ve been trying to get a hold of you. Have you been talking to Tenchi?

Ruri: Tenchi is either abusing drugs, or there’s some weird writing on his walls that shows up every so often. What’s in your room?

Tomoyo: Uh… an exercise bike and a key.

Ruri: Have you ridden the bike?

Tomoyo: Yeah, a couple times.

Ruri: I want you to ride your bike for a few minutes while I call Tenchi.

Tomoyo: Okay.

(Tomoyo hangs up and starts riding.)

(In Tenchi’s room, the weird writing shows up again. Tenchi is on the phone.)

Tenchi: Ruri, it just came back on again.

Ruri: Great. Tomoyo’s bike controls the lights. I told her to stay on a few minutes. What were those names?

Tenchi: Okay, it says I have to Find Rei. It lists three names, Rei Ayanami, Rei Hino, and Rei Sagami.

(Ruri writes the names down.)

Ruri: Okay, anything else?

Tenchi: Yeah, it says "You have the key."

Ruri: Is that you as in you or you as in me?

Tenchi: You as in me.

Ruri: Okay.

(Tomoyo gets off the bike and goes to the phone, and gets a busy signal. She hangs up. Caption: "40:00 remaining")

(Shot of Ruri, looking through the newspaper.)

Ruri: Okay, there’s something here about a Rei Hino’s birth date being April 17. It doesn’t mention the other two.

(Tomoyo rummages through the shower again, with 30:00 listed as remaining. She finds the curtain, and "0417" and goes over to the keypad on her door. She types it in- to no avail. She then goes and looks through the desk and finds a book titled "A Room With a View." She looks at it suspiciously, then goes over to an oddly colored curtain and rips it off. She sees a truck nearby. With her binoculars, she can see the writing on it, "Jan. 10.")

Barb: (VO) Tomoyo has found the first major clue. A van with the label January 10- the date this whole thing started.

(Tomoyo get another busy signal. She tries 0110 on her keypad. It opens and she runs out, with 25 minutes left. Before she gets too far, the phone rings. She runs back in.)

Tomoyo: Ruri?

Ruri: Could you try the number 0417 on your keypad?

Tomoyo: 0417? I found the same number on my shower curtain.

Ruri: We’ll have to have Tenchi try it.

Tomoyo: Yeah, but I got out already. I saw a date on a van outside and it had January 10. 0110 was my code.

Ruri: Okay, I’ll try them.

Tomoyo: Yeah, and have Tenchi try them too. Does he need light?

Ruri: Probably.

Tomoyo: Okay, I can never get too much exercise!

(Tomoyo lights up Tenchi’s room as both Tenchi and Ruri try the numbers. None work. Ruri calls Tomoyo again.)

Ruri: If you can get out, why don’t you go over to my room? Bring the key, maybe that opens it.

Tomoyo: Okay.

(Tomoyo goes over to Ruri’s room and tries opening her door.)

Tomoyo: Ruri? It doesn’t work. Got anything else that needs opening?

Ruri: A safe and a refrigerator, but those have combination locks.

Tomoyo: Did you try those?

Ruri: Hold on.

(Ruri enters 0417 on the safe. It opens. Inside, in all it’s majesty… is a Gekigangar doll, commonly found on the Nadesico.)

Ruri: (dry) Give me a break. (calling) Tomoyo? I found a stupid Gekigangar doll.

(Shot of Tomoyo.)

Tomoyo: Okay… um… what was in the briefcase?

(The newspaper slides under the door. Tomoyo sifts through it, and finds a sheet of music.)

Tomoyo: Hey, I found some sheet music. Do you know how to play?

Ruri: Does it matter? I don’t have anything to play with. But Tenchi had a xylophone.

Tomoyo: Okay, I’ll take this to Tenchi’s room.

Ruri: Hurry up.

(Tomoyo runs to Tenchi’s room and slips the music under his door.)

Tomoyo: Tenchi? Any idea how to play this?

Tenchi: (VO) On the xylophone? I don’t know that much about sheet music, and wouldn’t know where to begin on a xylophone.

Tomoyo: Shoot. We only have about seven minutes left.

Tenchi: What do you think these names mean?

Tomoyo: Hey, why don’t you try asking the clerks for one of them? Ask them if they know of a Rei Sagami.

Tenchi: Okay.

(Tenchi feels his way to the phone. Kitsune answers.)

Kitsune: Hey, you better get down here fast. If I’m getting fifty percent of your winnings… I want you to earn…

Tenchi: Shut up, can I get Rei Hino?

(Shot of Ruri, eyeing the laptop. Her phone rings.)

Barb: (VO) With Tenchi’s vast knowledge of anime… he just asked the clerk for Sailor Mars.

(Shot of Tenchi and Ruri, talking on the phone.)

Tenchi: What are we missing?

Ruri: I don’t know. Did we overlook something?

(Time expires. Caption: "MISSION FAILED.")

(At the lobby, Tomoyo walks up to Barb.)

Barb: Hello. Good effort, but you lost.

Tomoyo: I suppose we have to get Ruri and Tenchi out still.

Barb: Yeah, let’s show you how it’s done.

(Barb and Tomoyo walk up to the counter. The blue-haired girl greets them.)

Barb: The first major task was to figure out which Rei we were dealing with here, and if you would have recognized that this girl, and the other woman were no ordinary bellhops, it would have been a vital hint. One is Kitsune from Love Hina. She’s just a pointless cameo. But this lovely lady here is Rei Ayanami, from Evangelion. There is a package here in her name… Rei?

Rei: Hai.

(Rei fetches an extremely large package and hands it to Tomoyo. Tomoyo falls down due to the weight.)

(Shot of Tomoyo opening it… to reveal a smaller package… and so on. After five and six boxes, Tomoyo uncovers a tiny locked box.)

Tomoyo: All those boxes for this?

Barb: That was supposed to be annoying comic relief.

Tomoyo: That was just annoying.

Barb: Anyway, put your key into that box.

(Tomoyo does so, and opens the box.)

Tomoyo: And I get… another key.

Barb: The key to Ruri’s room.

(Upstairs, Tomoyo uses the key to get into Ruri’s room. Inside, Barb goes up to the laptop.)

Barb: Ruri, you’ll notice that there are four markings on this laptop, over the numbers 1, 5, 7, and 0. That is the key to the refrigerator.

Tomoyo: And you missed that?

Ruri: Guess so…

(Ruri unlocks the refrigerator. Inside, there is a photo of Akito.)

Ruri: What’s Akito doing in here?

Barb: That’s the other clue. Anything else that relates with him?

Ruri: Well… both he and Gekiganger seem to be the obsessions on the Nadesico.

Barb: Bingo.

(Shot of Tenchi, puzzling over the sheet music.)

Barb: The Nadesico theme song, "You Get to Burning," was what Tenchi was supposed to play on the xylophone.

(Tenchi hits the first five notes of the chorus, four E notes and an A. The door opens.)
Tenchi: (VO) All I had to do was play five notes on the xylophone and it would have opened. Seems so obvious after it’s all done.

(Shot of Ruri, in the lobby.)
Ruri: There’s a xylophone in the room. Didn’t Tenchi figure that he had to play it to get out? Seems pretty stupid to me.

(Shot of Tomoyo, in the lobby.)
Tomoyo: Ruri missed a lot of things in her room. She missed the markings on the computer, she missed the music in the paper, and I had to tell her to put that number in the safe.

(Shot of Ruri, in the lobby.)
Ruri: Call it a bad day. I get them too. This was a tough game, and I wasn’t at my best today.

(Dissolve, to the three eating dinner. Tomoyo raises a glass.)

Tomoyo: Well, seeing as this is our last night, and that tomorrow we’ll discover who the Mole is, I just want to wish you all the best of luck.

(Tenchi and Ruri follow suit.)

Tenchi: Thanks.

Ruri: Yes. You too.

Tenchi: May the best player win.

Ruri: I still say the best player is the Mole.

Tomoyo: Agreed. The Mole did a fantastic job.

Tenchi: Tooting your own horn, Tomoyo?

(Tomoyo laughs.)

(Shot of the three walking the streets.)
Tomoyo: (VO) I kind of dread tomorrow. This game has been my life for almost a month, and I’ve met these wonderful people. It’ll be sad when everything’s revealed and the game is suddenly over.

(Shot of Ruri, entering her room.)
Ruri: (VO) Some of this game has been a lot of fun, some of it hasn’t. I’m definitely ready to go home, but it was a great ride while it lasted.

(Shot of Tenchi, entering his room.)
Tenchi: (VO) We talk a lot about how we "shatter the hopes" of the other seven who didn’t get this far, and there’s a sense of reality to that. I remember that right when we started, Naru came to me and talked about how much she wanted to win this and how much fun it would be. You do feel a little bit sorry for her, considering how much fun this really was. But really, it was partially because of myself, or Tomoyo, or Ruri that ended the dreams of these people. It’s all part of the game, and through everything, I’ve made friends out of it.

(Shot of Barb in a bullfighting ring.)

Barb: In the beginning, there were ten. And unlike Survivor, we aren’t going to have some stupid tribute to them. They’re gone. Only three remain. Ruri, Tenchi, and Tomoyo.

(The three combatants enter the ring, dressed up somewhat.)

Barb: One will be crowned the winner, and will receive $515,000. One will be the Mole’s eighth victim. And one… is the Mole.

(They reach Barb.)

Barb: Well, no matter what happens tonight… you three played great, and earned far more money than either Manny or myself wanted… er, expected you to make. Now comes the moment of truth. 25 questions about the Mole’s identity. This is the last time you three will be together as a group for a while, so if there’s any final words, say it now.

(Silence for a second. Tenchi smiles.)

Tenchi: Baka.

(Tomoyo smiles.)

Tenchi: Seriously… good luck.

Tomoyo: Thanks.

Ruri: What he said.

Tomoyo: (jokingly) You mean baka?

Ruri: Yeah, sure.

Barb: Okay then. Any questions?

(Silence.)

Barb: Have at it.

(Each of the three walk to the tables, in the middle of the ring, stationed far apart.)

(Shot of Tomoyo, taking the test.)
Tomoyo: (VO) So one of those two is the Mole. I used to think it was Tenchi, but every time I see Tenchi do something overly suspicious, I begin to think that it might be Ruri. She lies low, but there’s always that sign that suggests it might be her.

(Shot of Ruri, taking the test.)
Ruri: I think that Tomoyo knows Tenchi’s the Mole, and the way they suspect each other is just goofing around between those friends. It would allow for a lot of leeway if they were teaming up against me. And while it would work to help cast suspicion on somebody like Taichi or Satoshi, they aren’t going to convince me that I’m the Mole.

(Shot of Tenchi, taking the test.)
Tenchi: I like Tomoyo a lot. She seems like somebody that could be a good friend. But at the same, she always keeps a small air of mystery about, as if she’s hiding something and afraid to let out with it.

(Flashback to Ruri in the sniper game.)
Tomoyo: (VO) The level of intelligence Ruri showed at the beginning of the game does not match with the things she’s been forgetting now. Whenever a question comes up, Ruri conveniently forgets the answer, or ignores the obvious, and with fewer people left, and this joking going on between Tenchi and me accusing each other, it would be the best time for the Ruri to strike if she were the Mole.

(Flashback to Ruri answering the sheep question in the museum.)
Tomoyo: (VO) Ruri seems to take everything in stride, as if she’s perfectly capable of handling everything thrown at her… as if she was trained to handle everything thrown at her. I know that Tenchi and Ruri have both put themselves in capable positions to be the Mole, it’s time to settle on a final decision, and I am settling on Ruri.

(Flashback of Tenchi in the laundry game.)
Ruri: (VO) Everything just seems to go back to those socks. From the moment I found them and Tenchi tried to pass them off, I had him at the back of my head. Up until then, his main strategy was randomly pointing at people and accusing them.

(Flashback of Tenchi, refusing to walk on the hot coals.)
Ruri: (VO) Now, he’s doing things like refusing to walk over hot coals, or not playing the xylophone when he was obviously supposed to. His strategy may have evolved, but his goal has not.

(Flashback of Tomoyo in the Fortress game, and Daisuke knocking over the bowl.)
Tenchi: (VO) The way that Tomoyo shot at the intruder, and the location of where the shots ended up are an instant signal that she could be the Mole. They ended up way off base, and you can’t dismiss that as a bonehead mistake without thinking about it further.

(Flashback of Yukito, pointing out the jewels in the box structure.)
Tenchi: (VO) Taichi maintained that the jewels were not his idea, and that Tomoyo wanted them there. Yukito seemed to be able to pinpoint her work with ease, and although it seems difficult for the Mole to predict something like that, it has to be possible.

(Flashback of Ruri, in the Cartier Game, walking up the hill, out of breath.)
Tomoyo: (VO) Ruri had no trouble running up to meet Satoshi in the BCH game, but a day later, when we needed it, Ruri was suddenly out of breath, and had trouble climbing the hill.

(Flashback of Tenchi earlier in the episode.)
Ruri: (VO) Randomly selecting the answers to a question? How can that not be considered Mole-ish activity?

(Flashback of Tomoyo talking to Akito during the ATM game.)
Tenchi: (VO) Tomoyo was the one that brought up the issue with Akito’s dead parents, and deliberately cost the team ten thousand dollars. From then on, I’ve had my eye on her, and she hasn’t diminished as a suspect once.

(Montage of all three looking at each other suspiciously. Eventually, they all stand before Barb.)
Barb: While we go tally the votes, we’ll ask that you each be sequestered. When we are ready, we’ll contact you individually and do our business. If a green thumbprint appears, you are either the winner or the Mole. If a red thumbprint appears- you are the Mole’s eight victim. Ruri- please exit to your left. Tenchi- down the center. Tomoyo- to the right.

(They do so, shots of all of them.)

Barb: (VO) Soon, they, and you at home, will finally discover who the Mole really is… in the next episode.

(Shot of Tomoyo, sequestered.)
Tomoyo: Well, it’s time to either taste the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat. I’ve had my share of friends go through both, so I’m well prepared either way.

(Shot of Tenchi, sequestered.)
Tenchi: It was a wild ride, and certainly fun while it lasted. All that’s left is to reap the spoils.

(Shot of Ruri, sequestered, looking calm.)
Ruri: What can I say? I’m nervous as hell.

(This leaves us to wait until the next episode- where the previous seven gather to elaborate on who wins, who the Mole is, and what you missed that gave everything away!)
