In one corner of the room, four of the girls are seen snoring away. Rita sits straight up right against the corner. Casey is leaning on Rita’s right shoulder, while Chelsea lies peacefully with her head resting in Rita’s lap. Kari lies just a few feet away from them, snuggled up with her arms around her legs, which are pulled in to her chest. On the opposite side, the four remaining girls [Meilin, Misty, Yolei, and Sasami] are playing cards. Go fish, to be exact. Sasami: Yolei, do you have any fours? Yolei: Go fish. Misty: (moans) This is boring! Meilin: Stop complaining! We’re the only four left! We’ve got to do our best to stay awake. Yolei: Meilin’s right. Meilin: Of course I’m right! Yolei: Anyway, we can’t win if we’re sleeping. (to Meilin) Got any kings? Meilin forks over a king to Yolei, who smiles with glee. Misty: Speaking of winning, how do we plan out the rest of the day? Sasami: Those four will have to help keep us awake. After all, they are getting their rest. Misty: Sasami, do you have any fours? Sasami: (hands over hers) Rats. Misty puts down a trio of fours on the floor. Yolei: It’s weird how you’re saying this game is boring, yet you’ve won the last three! Misty: Exactly. You guys aren’t much of a challenge. Meilin: (to Misty) Got any nines? Misty: Go fish! Sasami: (yawns) Do you guys think it’s early enough to start preparing breakfast? Misty: What do you mean prepare? Whose idea was it to bring in a box of frozen sausage links, four croissant rolls, and a box of a dozen Nutrient Grain bars? Meilin: Not mine. Yolei: Not me. Sasami: I may be a cook, but I’m not a miracle worker! How am I supposed to cook frozen sausages? Yolei: (sighs) Those Nutrient Grain bars better be good. Misty: You mean you actually eat those? Yolei: Not really. But my family runs a convenience store. Whenever we get something new that we’ve never seen before, one of us have to try it. Once, we had this shipment of apples that came in. Misty: What’s wrong with apples? Yolei: They were sour! Have you ever tasted sour apples before? Meilin: (smirks) Only someone like you would complain about sour apples, especially since you’re one yourself. Yolei: What? Sasami: Calm down you two! You don’t want Kari to wake up, do you? Misty: Definitely not. (in Kari’s voice) Stop fighting! You’re all big babies! I’m tired of being your mother! Yolei: Misty, please. Kari is not like that. Misty: Oh yeah? And what is she like, since you know her so well? Yolei: (in Kari’s voice) What’s going on? Why is it getting dark? Is it because my soul’s being absorbed by the darkness? Or is it that I can’t choose between TK and Davis? Why? Why? Why? Meilin, Misty, and Sasami laugh uncontrollably. Meilin: That is so funny! Misty: You mean Kari is like that? Yolei: Yeah. You see, she’s the holder of the Crest of Light. As the protector of light, she is the most susceptible to the rays of darkness. Sasami: And who are TK and Davis? Yolei: Friends of ours. You see, Kari might like TK, but she’s not sure. Although Davis has been getting her attention a lot more lately. It’s like she’s debating in her mind over which one she’d want as a boyfriend. Sasami: Isn’t that sweet. Misty: That’s so romantic! Meilin: Are either of them worth her time? Yolei: TK’s a nice person. He and Kari have been best friends for a few years now. Davis is always jealous of TK because he thinks they are an official couple. So he keeps trying to prove that he’s better than TK so that Kari will go out with him. Sasami: So whom do you think she’s going to choose? Yolei: My gut’s telling me that she’ll eventually choose TK, but I’m sure Davis won’t give up without a fight. Meilin: I’m sure he won’t. I have that exact same problem. Misty: You do? Sasami: Do you have an ace, Misty? Misty: Go fish. Meilin: Anyway, I’m engaged to my cousin Li. Yolei: (eyes wide open in surprise) You mean you want to marry your cousin? That’s gross! Meilin: It was my family’s decision. Besides, Li’s cute anyway, so it doesn’t matter to me. Sasami: There’s nothing wrong with it anyway. On my planet, my older sister Ayeka was engaged to marry our half brother, Yosho. Misty: They allow that stuff on your planet? That must mean... Meilin’s from another planet! Meilin: Dodo brain! I’m not from another planet! Yolei: Then where are you from? Meilin: Hong Kong. Misty: Oh, I see. (to herself) Check to make sure I don’t have any relatives from Hong Kong. Yolei: Speaking of weird traditions, let me tell you one of mine. In my family, the older you are, the more you get to eat for desert. Being the youngest, I always get left with scraps when my mom makes us all lemon meringue pies... Meanwhile, in the pink team’s room... Only Nikki and Duplica are asleep thus far. Both of them are sleeping on one side of the room. Nikki is sleeping with her face looking up towards the ceiling. Duplica is lying with her body turned towards the nearest wall. While Mimi is nowhere to be seen, the other girls are sitting in a circle by the door, with Madison walking around them, tapping each girl’s head as she passes them. Madison: Duck. Duck. Duck. Giselle: I can’t believe we’re reduced to playing Duck, Duck, Goose! This is a child’s game! Sora: It was either that or play Kick the Can. Sakura: Why don’t we try playing it? How bad can it be? Jun: You mean you don’t know how to play Kick the Can? Sakura: No. I’ve never played it before. Giselle: It’s simple! All you do is kick an empty can! Whoever kicks it the farthest wins! Sakura: That’s it? That’s a dumb game. Sora: Exactly. That’s why we’re playing this. Madison: (taps Sakura on the head) Goose! Sakura gets up and chases Madison around the circle. Miraculously, Madison makes it to Sakura’s spot before she can get tagged, only because Sakura tripped herself up. Sora: Really though, there’s got to be something else we can do. Sakura: Why don’t we just talk about ourselves? We haven’t had enough time to do that. Giselle: Good idea! Sakura: Really? Giselle: No. I’m just too tired to retort you correctly. Sora: (rolls her eyes) I’ll go get Mimi. She probably wants to play too. Sora walks over to the back of the room and knocks on another door, which leads into the bathroom. Sora: Mimi? Mimi? Are you in there? Sora leans on the door and hears a strange noise coming from it. Sora: (knocks on the door) Mimi? Mimi: (yells) Aaaaaaahhh! Sora hears a thud and then a moan from inside. Sora: Mimi, are you okay? Mimi: (from behind the door) Ow. I banged my hip on the side of the bathtub. Sora: Were you sleeping? Mimi: No. Of course not! Sora: Mimi... Mimi: Okay, I was sleeping! I couldn’t help it! (sighs) I’ll be out in a minute... Sora shakes her head as she walks back to the others. Madison: So, is she coming or not? Giselle: Don’t tell me... Sora: (nods) Yeah. She fell asleep while she was sitting in the bathroom. Sakura: Oh boy... Layla: (VO) Coming up after the break... Giselle: (CC) Some plan. We still have a whole day or so to go, but only three of us have stayed awake! Layla: (VO) As time marches on, will both teams fall well short of the deadline? Meilin: Whatever it takes, keep Misty awake! Giselle: (slaps Sakura across the face) That ought to keep you awake! Layla: (VO) And later on, will Misty and Sora resolve their differences? Misty: Like that’ll happen. Sora: Yeah. Layla: (VO) Catch it all when Roomies returns... * * * * * * * * * * Day Five - 3:00 p.m. (Time elapsed: 20 hours) In the red team’s room, Chelsea and Kari are doing their best to keep Yolei and Meilin awake. Rita and Casey are quietly talking amongst themselves. Sasami and Misty, also struggling to stay awake, have decided to help each other prepare dinner for their team. Misty: How are we supposed to prepare rice without a rice cooker? Sasami: I don’t know. We may have to use the hot water in the sink to cook it. Misty: You’re kidding! Sasami: It’s either that or go without rice until we get out of here. Elsewhere in the room... Chelsea: And so Zachary comes along and tells Li that he has to wash the chalkboard, clean the erasers, record the day’s activities on a sheet of paper, and then sing and dance in front of the whole class! Kari: (giggles) Wow! I’ve never heard of a class president demand something like that. Chelsea: It’s not that Zachary abuses his power. He’s just a little nutty sometimes. Kari: (smiles) You want to hear nutty? Let me tell you about my classmate Davis. Yolei: (interrupting) What’s there to talk about? Davis isn’t that bright! Remember that one time that he thought he saw a control spire in our world after we got back from the Digiworld? Kari: But Yolei, Davis ended up being right. That was the first day that the Digimon were slipping into our world! Yolei: Well, what about that time he tried to help Cody and Ken settle their differences while we were destroying spires? Kari: Didn’t you help him? Yolei: Not physically! Chelsea: (giggles) Now this Davis kid must be funny. Meilin: Yeah, whatever. Kari: What’s wrong Meilin? Meilin: I’m just getting tired, that’s all. This challenge is really the pits. Chelsea: Oh. I’m sorry that I fell asleep, if that’s what you’re sulking about. Kari: Me too. Meilin: Don’t worry about it. We can’t do anything to change that now. We just have to hope that the rest of us can stay awake. Rita and Casey look on from the other side of the room. Casey: (VO) Meilin looks a little sad. Maybe it’s because we’re all letting her down. Rita: (CC) I think Meilin’s lost a little faith in us. We’re not even halfway through and we’re already down to four people. I just hope we’re doing a better job than the other team. In the pink team’s room, things have taken a turn for the worst... Madison: (shaking Sakura furiously) Sakura! You’ve got to stay awake! Sakura: (a little dazed) Is it morning yet? Madison: (breathes a sigh of relief) No. But we were about to lose you there. Giselle: (walking over) It’s not much inspiration for the rest of us if the captain falls asleep, you know. Sakura: Sorry. Who is still awake anyway? Madison: Besides us three? Only Sora. She’s over there reading a book on flower arrangements or something. Madison points to another part of the room, where Sora is sitting alone, reading. Giselle: How come I didn’t notice her over there until now? Sakura: I don’t know. Maybe she’s just been a little quiet the past few hours. Madison: Maybe we’d better check to see that she’s still awake. The three girls walk over to Sora. Sakura reaches down and pulls the book away. Behind it, they find a very irate Sora. Sora: Just what are you doing Sakura? Sakura: (sweatdrops) Oh sorry! We thought you had fallen asleep. Giselle: We wanted to check up on you. Sora: (calms down) Oh. Madison: Are you okay? Sora: I’m fine. Sorry about yelling at you, Sakura. Sakura: It’s okay. I probably would’ve done the same thing if I were in your position. Giselle: This lack of sleep is just killing us right now. We have to find a way to fight it. Sora: Maybe we should wake the others first. They look to the other side of the room. Mimi and Jun are both sound asleep. Duplica is snoring, while Nikki quietly plays jacks by the window. The girls go over to wake their teammates up. Sora: (shaking Mimi) Mimi! Wake up! Mimi: (talking in her sleep) Is that a Digimon or are you just happy to see me? Sora: Mimi! Mimi opens her eyes. She glances at Sora briefly before covering her mouth to yawn. Mimi: I’m sorry. Did I fall asleep again? Madison: (going over to Duplica) O Duplica! Time to get up! Nikki: (shakes Duplica) Get up sleepyhead! Duplica: (getting up and rubbing her eyes) What? Sakura: Jun! Wake up! Giselle: I command you to wake up! Jun: (quickly getting up) I’m awake! I’m awake! Sakura: Morning everyone! Or would it be afternoon by now? Anyway, since we should be close to the halfway mark, if we haven’t passed it already that is, I think it’s time to reevaluate our strategy. Giselle: Good idea. Sakura: Really? Giselle: Yeah. I mean it this time. Sora: If Sakura, Giselle, Madison, and I hope to stay awake for the next twenty-four hours or so, we need your help. Nikki: I’ve been thinking about that. I say everyone just pick a partner. Those of us who have already slept some will be responsible for making sure that the four of you stay up. Mimi: I agree! Sakura: Okay. Mimi, you partner with Sora. Jun will go with Giselle. Nikki can watch over me. Duplica, you help keep Madison awake. Everyone got it? The rest of team responds with an affirmative yes. Sakura: (smiles) Then let’s get started! We’re going to win this challenge! I just know it! Night Five (Time elapsed: 27 hours) It is just after ten o’clock at night. Meilin, Yolei, Misty, Kari, and Chelsea are currently up. Chelsea is playing solitaire by herself, while the others are playing spades. Sasami, Rita, and Casey are all asleep at the moment. Kari: It’s too bad Sasami couldn’t stay up any longer. Meilin: Don’t worry about her. We have to worry about ourselves. Misty: I know. Yolei: (yawns) Speaking of which, I think I’m about to black out. Kari: Not now Yolei! We need you awake! Misty: Yeah! Yolei puts her cards down, walks over to the corner, lies down, and then promptly falls asleep. Misty: Another one bites the dust. Meilin: Just how many of us are left? Kari: If I remember right, just you two. Misty: Chelsea! Come over and play with us! Chelsea: But I don’t know how to play spades! Meilin: We’ll teach you, girl! Now come on! You want to help us stay awake, right? Chelsea sighs. She abandons her game and goes over to join the others. At the same time, the pink team is having their own troubles... Giselle: Is Sora still reading that book of hers? Madison: I’ll go check. Madison goes over to Sora. She pulls the book down. This time, though, she sees that Sora’s eyes are closed. Madison: Sora’s out. Sakura: Wasn’t Mimi supposed to be watching her? Madison: Yes. She looks and spots Mimi nearby... lying down on the floor, right next to Sora. Madison: Unfortunately... Mimi’s asleep too. Giselle: (CC) Some plan. We still have a whole day or so to go, but only three of us have stayed awake! Nikki and Duplica come out of the bathroom... at the same time. Giselle: What were you two doing in there? Nikki: Playing in the bathtub. Duplica: I brought these neat Ditto figurines that were shaped like sailboats. Nikki and I were having a race to see who could get their boat to the other side of the tub first. Jun: You know, I find that very weird. Madison: I agree. Are you guys sure that was all you were doing? Nikki: Yes! Duplica: I really hope you’re not thinking what I think you’re thinking. Sakura: And that would be? Madison: (uncomfortably) Could we drop the subject? Giselle: I agree. This talk is just creeping me out. The girls break up into their own little groups. Giselle and Jun go off into one corner. Sakura and Madison go into another, and Nikki and Duplica into the remaining one. Layla: (VO) When the show returns... Meilin: Whatever it takes, keep Misty awake! Giselle: (slaps Sakura across the face) That ought to keep you awake! Layla: (VO) Which team will last long enough to win the challenge? And then... Kari: Misty. Sora. I’ll do whatever it takes for you two to become friends. Misty: Like that’ll happen. Sora: Yeah. Layla: (VO) When Roomies returns... * * * * * * * * * * Day Six (Time elapsed: 35 hours) Layla: (VO) It is six o’clock in the morning. With thirteen hours to go, the Roomies struggle to stay awake. Let’s check in and see who’s still up and about... In the pink team’s room, it seems that their plan for victory has failed once again. Only the three remaining girls, Sakura, Madison, and Giselle are still awake. Everyone else on the team is asleep once again. Madison: Whatever we do, we have to stay awake. Giselle: How much longer must we suffer? Sakura: (starting to fall asleep) I’d say a few minutes... Giselle: (slaps Sakura across the face) That ought to keep you awake! Sakura: (holding her face where it was slapped) Ouch! I guess I deserved that! Giselle: What am I doing? I just hit one of my teammates! Madison: You didn’t mean it. You’re just doing your job. The three girls sit silently for a few seconds. Madison decides to speak up again. Madison: You know, maybe we should just give up. Sakura and Giselle: What? Madison: You know, go to sleep. The other team ought to be out by now. Giselle: What if they aren’t? Madison: That’s a chance we’ll have to take. Sakura: No! I’m not giving up! I’ll last as long as I can! You two can go to sleep if you want, but I’m going to fight this to the very end! Giselle: Me too! I didn’t become the top student in my class at Pokémon Tech by just sitting back! Madison: Then I’m with you guys if you’re in it! Sakura, Madison, and Giselle: (simultaneously) We’re going to fight to the end! Over in the red team’s room, though, their numbers are starting to get dangerously low. Misty and Kari fight to keep Meilin from falling asleep. Misty: Meilin! Don’t fall asleep! Kari: We need you! Meilin: Don’t worry about me! Whatever it takes, keep Misty awake! Kari: I’ll do whatever it takes! Misty: I’ll stay strong! Just for you, Meilin! With that, Meilin falls with a thud onto the floor. Kari and Misty hear snores coming from Meilin almost immediately. Kari: (sighs) Well, it looks like it’s down to you, Misty. Misty: Yeah. Kari: Who would have ever thought it would end up this way? Misty: Definitely not me. I was expecting Meilin to be the last one to give up. Kari: I wonder how the other team’s doing. Misty: For our sake, all of their people better be asleep by now. Layla: (VO) Unfortunately, neither team lives up to their promises. Both teams fall a few hours short of the full 48-hour time limit. So which team succeeded in the end? Night Six - 7:30 p.m. The two teams are gathered in the downstairs recreation room. The pink team is on one side, with the red team on the other. Miss McKenzie stands in the center, with a small piece of paper in her right hand. Layla: Hello everyone! I know some of you haven’t slept in almost two whole days, so I’ll get straight to the point. After evaluating the camera tapes, we have decided the winner. For the red team, the last person to fall asleep was Misty. She lasted 38 hours, 29 minutes, and 3 seconds. Misty gives a faint smile to the rest of her team. Layla: For the pink team, Sakura and Giselle teamed up and feel asleep at the same time. Their time was 41 hours, 5 minutes, and 48 seconds. That makes the pink team the winners of the first physical challenge. The pink team quietly celebrates, seeing as how most of them were still lacking sleep. The red team quickly disperses without argument. Layla: Wait guys! I know some of you are tired, but I also know that some of you are very hungry as well. So I’ve prepared you a feast in the dining room. You’re all welcome to join me! Most of the cast follows Miss McKenzie to the dining room, but a few decide to skip dinner and head straight for their bedrooms. Day Seven Despite the fact that it was almost one in the afternoon, most of the cast was still asleep. A couple of them, upon waking, were still fuzzy over the details of who won the challenge the day before. Giselle: (CC) I was so tired last night I couldn’t remember if we won or not. Casey: (CC) I remember. We lost by about two and a half hours, I think. Upstairs, Kari was leading Sora up to her bedroom for a little talk. Sora: What is this all about, Kari? Kari: You’ll see. Kari opens the door and steps inside first. Sora follows her... and then stops when she sees Misty silently looking at one of her Cascade badges on her bed. Misty: Huh? Kari, what is she doing here? Sora: Kari brought me up here to see something. I sincerely hope it’s not you. Misty: My sentiments exactly. Kari closes the door behind her and ushers Sora to her bed. Sora sits down as Kari pulls a chair from under the desk in the room, and pulls it in between the two beds. Sora: Just what are you planning, Kari? Misty: Yeah. Kari: Being locked up in a room for forty-eight hours got me thinking. The main reason that the relations between all of the house members have been unsteady is because of you two. Misty: That’s preposterous! Sora: That’s not true, Kari! Misty here’s been the only catalyst for trouble here. Misty: Excuse me? Take that Digidestined butt of yours and make your way out, because I don’t want to talk to it! Sora: (smirks) Figures. That’s the only part of me you’d want to talk to at all. Misty: What is that supposed to mean? Sora: Exactly what it sounds like. Kari: That’s enough you two! I’m tired of hearing all of this bickering, especially from you two! Sora: So what do you want us to do about it? Kari: Misty. Sora. I’ll do whatever it takes for you two to become friends. Misty: Like that’ll happen. Sora: Yeah. Kari: (VO) Why won’t they listen to me? Sora: It’s not that I’m being pessimistic or anything. It’s just that agreeing with the Digimon hater over there just wouldn’t feel right. Misty: That’s what I was thinking! Except that I don’t like her because she’s a Pokémon hater! Sora: I never said that! Misty: Maybe you didn’t say it, but you sure acted like it. Kari: Okay you two. Let’s try to fix this one problem at a time. Misty, why do you hate Digimon so much? Misty: Why should I tell you? You’re from Digimon too! Kari: Look, do you want help or not? Misty: I can fix this argument myself. Sora: Then why are we still arguing? Misty: Because you are so impossible to get along with! Sora: You know, it would help if you’d actually try! Kari: Sora! Stop! Sora: I’m just telling her the truth. Kari: Let’s try something else. Sora, why haven’t you made an attempt to attain peace between you two? Sora: You think I haven’t tried? Misty over there hasn’t listened to me since the moment I arrived! Misty: (rolls her eyes) Whatever. Kari: (sighs) Let me try this. What will it take for you two to stop arguing? Misty: I’ll stop when Sora leaves the house! Sora: (gasps in surprise) That’s just what you want! You want me out of the way so that you’ll have a clear path at the grand prize! Well, I’m not leaving! Besides, your chances would worsen if I left. Misty: I’m willing to take that chance. Kari: (shakes her head) Oh boy... Sora: I’m only going to stop arguing when Misty lightens up! These stupid show rivalries are so unprofessional! There’s got to be a better way of settling this contest without any of that! Misty: You’re just jealous because my show is better than yours is! Sora: (gets off of Kari‘s bed) I don’t have to stand for this! I’m leaving! Sora opens the door and walks out of the room. Misty turns towards the window and scowls. Misty: (sarcastically) Thanks for wasting my time, Kari. Kari: Oh boy... this might take awhile. A little later in the day, Kari is in the upstairs recreation room with Sakura, Chelsea, Madison, and Rita. They are watching some TV. Suddenly Yolei runs into the room. Yolei: Kari! Kari: (turns around) What’s wrong Yolei? Yolei: Someone wants to talk to you on the phone. Kari: Who? Yolei: Some professor from this place called Pallet Town. Kari: What does he want with me? I’ve never been there before... Yolei leads Kari downstairs to the kitchen, where the cordless phone is in the hands of Sasami. Sasami: Here you go Kari! Kari: (taking the receiver) Thanks! (speaking into it) Hello? Oak: (from the other end) Hello! Am I speaking to Miss Kari Kamiya? Kari: Yes. Oak: I know you don’t know me, but I have a favor to ask of you. Kari: Okay... End Episode Four Layla: (VO) Later today on Roomies, the boys’ edition, see what Professor Oak’s call is all about. In the meantime, here’s what’s up next time here on the girls’ edition... Casey: Maybe now things will calm down. Giselle: Don’t bet on it! Layla: (VO) As the girls get a break from competing in challenges, will it give them a chance to settle things amongst themselves? Kari: I’m almost there! If only those two would listen! Mimi: Maybe I could help a little bit. Duplica: Sure! What harm could it do? Layla: (VO) What harm indeed... Sora: Leave Mimi alone! Misty: Why doesn’t she mind her own business? Mimi: (crying) I said I don’t want to fight any more! Sasami: (sighs) Everyone’s having fun again... as usual. Jun: (CC) You call this fun? I’m sick and tired of being Giselle’s servant! Layla: (VO) Don’t miss the next episode, here on Roomies... Copyright Date: 5/30/01
