It was now pouring down rain outside. So instead of going out, they’re all stuck in the mansion. While most of the guys are in the recreation rooms playing a board game or two, a scant few are off doing their own things. For example, Li is off meditating in his room. Izzy is on the Internet, as usual. And Tracey is in his room, sketching alone. Tracey: (CC) It’s nice to get some time alone, even on a dreary day like this. I’ve only had a few chances to work in my sketchbook since we got here. Except when I was helping Professor Oak in his laboratory, of course. As Tracey continued to draw away, he began thinking of what had just happened earlier that day. Flashback to last episode... Meanwhile, Tracey’s phone has begun to ring. He answers it quickly. Tracey: Tracey Sketchit, assistant to Professor Oak, speaking! Mystery Caller # 2: (voice only) Ugh. It’s you again. Get a life. Tracey: Giselle? Giselle: Who do you think it is? Your mother? Of course it’s me, you dimwit! Tracey: You don’t have to be so mean, you know. Giselle: Really? You want to see mean? I’ll show you mean! Giselle hangs up the phone. Tracey gasps in shock. Tracey: Well I’ll be darned. That was mean. I’ll show her. Tracey hangs the receiver up and then picks it back up. He begins dialing a phone number when he comes to a sudden realization... Tracey: I don’t know the number to the mansion in Reedington. (snaps his fingers) Darn it! I wanted to get her back! End flashback... Tracey: It’s weird. Giselle’s such a beautiful girl, yet she’s as arrogant as a Beedrill. What made her grow up that way, I wonder. Ash: Thinking about Giselle, huh? Tracey turns and sees Ash standing in the doorway. Tracey: How did you know I was thinking about her? Ash: Well, the fact that you were talking out loud and... Ash snatches the sketchbook from Tracey and points out a half finished drawing of Giselle. Ash: You were making a sketch of her. Tracey: (snatching it back from Ash) Hey! We’re all entitled to our own dream girls! Ash: You think Giselle’s a dream girl? On the outside maybe, but on the inside she’s worse than Misty. Tracey: I know. I didn’t even think it was possible for anyone to be more stubborn than Misty. Ash: That’s what I thought too, until I got to know Giselle a little better. Tracey: Huh? Ash: Brock, Misty, and I met her at her school, Pokémon Tech, just outside Cerulean City. Tracey: (making a mental note) So that’s where Pokémon Tech is located... Ash: Brock and I fell for her instantly, while Misty was determined to show Giselle a thing or two about raising Pokémon. Tracey: (smirks) I bet she was just jealous. Ash: Anyway, after Giselle beat Misty in battle despite a type disadvantage, I challenged her to a battle myself. Tracey: Standing up for Misty, huh? Ash: Huh? Yeah, right. Why would I stand up for her? Tracey: (rolling his eyes) Never mind. Ash: As I was saying, with some quick thinking, Pikachu and I managed to find a strategy that led us to victory over Giselle and her Cubone. Tracey: Amazing! Ash: Yeah. I thought that Giselle would be more humble the next time we met, but according to Misty, she’s been nothing but that. Tracey: I think the way she responded to me earlier was a clear indication of that. Ash: Huh? Tracey: The little task the professor told us to do? Remember? Ash: Oh yeah, now I remember. Tracey: Maybe she’ll come around one day. If I’m ever in the Cerulean area, I might drop by. Ash: (sarcastically) Oh sure. Tracey: Oh, you’re just jealous because I’ve got a hotter girl than you do! Ash: What? Now wait a minute... Tracey: I’ll admit that in my travels with you two, sometimes I fell love with Misty myself. But I never came out with it because I was aware that you two were already a couple, whether you’d both admit it or not. Ash: I don’t know what you heard, but Misty and I are not a couple! Tracey: But now that I have Giselle, I don’t have to worry about thinking about how to get Misty to cheat on you so she could be with me. Ash: (angry) What? Tracey: I don’t see what you’re so angry about. You can have Misty. I’ve got Giselle. Ash: (still angry) Of all the things you could do, you were thinking about stealing Misty from me? Tracey: But I thought you said you two weren’t a couple? Ash: That’s besides the point! Tracey: So I see. You are a couple! Ash: (yelling at the top of his lungs) Get out! Get out now! Tracey: Why? This is my room. Ash: (calming down) Oh. Ash stomps out of the room and slams the door behind him. Tracey cringes in his seat. But then he quickly shrugs it off and begins to draw in his sketchbook once again. But then he stops when he starts to examine what he’s drawn so far of Giselle... basically, her face and her body. Not satisfied with the design or the proportions, for that matter, he tears the sheet out, crumples it up, throws it in the garbage, and starts drawing on a new sheet. Night Twenty Five Tai is on the videophone, dialing a number. In an instant, he begins to hear ringing as the sign ‘Voice Only’ appears on the now lighted up blue screen. After four rings, someone answers the phone. Mystery Voice: Yes? Tai: (cupping his hands over the phone) Hello! May I speak to Golden Girl, please? Mystery Voice: Who? Tai: Golden Girl. Mystery Voice: Boiling Oil? Tai: No, Golden Girl! Mystery Voice: Roll with Earl? Tai: No, I said Golden Girl! Mystery Voice: Look, I don’t know who you’re talking about. I’m going to hang up now. Tai: But wait just a... The phone line goes dead. Tai: That’s weird. I thought I had the right number. (sighs) I guess I’d better do a little more research. Meanwhile, Li has made his way to his room, without noticing that his roommate, Tracey, was still sketching away. He didn’t care, though. He just wanted to lie down on his bed and think about what Meilin had told him earlier that day. Li: (VO) Madison? Sakura? Together? It doesn’t make any sense. Tracey: (without looking up from his sketchbook) Something wrong, Li? Li: I’m fine. I need some time to myself... Tracey: Oh. Li: Please don’t bother me again, Tracey. I’m doing some thinking. Tracey: Okay. I won’t bother you if you won’t bother me. Deal? Li: (sighs) Whatever. Just leave me alone. As Tracey goes back to his doodling, Li’s mind continues to fill with questions. Li: (VO) How come Madison likes Sakura? That can’t be morally right. But does Sakura love her back? I sure hope not. It would be a pity if she does. Still, I can’t seem to get my mind off that sweet goofball. But this thing about Madison is giving me such a headache! I must know the answers now! I must know if this is for real! * * * * * * * * * * Day Twenty Six The following afternoon, Tai goes out to the mailbox to find a piece of paper in it. He brings it back inside and shows it to the first person he sees... Matt. Tai: It just says to come down to his laboratory for the next physical challenge. More will be explained there. It also says to wear comfortable clothing and some sneakers, preferably old ones. Matt: What could we be doing that involves old and dirty sneakers? Tai: Beats me, but I guess we’d better get the others. After gathering the group, the sixteen boys head down to the laboratory, where Professor Oak is waiting for them. Tai: What do you want us to do now? Jump through a flaming hoop or two? Matt: I heard the girls are relaxing. But us, we have to do something everyday! Oak: Calm down, guys. I’m sure you’ll enjoy today’s challenge, the fifth out of eight. Of course, first things first. We have to pick teams. And to do that, we need to announce who the team captains are. Professor Oak pulls two small white envelopes from his lab coat. One is stamped with a Seal of the Clow on it, while the other is stamped with the Digiegg of Reliability. He hands the former to Li and the latter to Cody. Cody: (surprised) I’m a team captain? No way! Li: Finally, I’ll get to show you guys how tough a captain should be! Oak: Okay, pick teams! [The team assignments (picked in random order): Yellow - Cody, Matt, Izzy, Richie, Ken, Ash, Tori, and Tracey White - Li, Tenchi, Gary, TK, Davis, Tai, Brock, and Joe] Oak: Now that teams have been chosen, the captains may now open the envelope and find out what today’s challenge is all about. Li and Cody open the envelopes and begin to read the instructions for the challenge out aloud. Li: If you thought Wednesday’s challenge took a lot of strength... Cody: It’s nothing compared to what you’ll face today... Li: You’ll be literally pulling yourself to the top... Cody: The team that gets there first adds to their pot... Li and Cody: (simultaneously) Today, you’ll be competing in a rock climbing challenge. Reactions from both teams are mixed over the announcement of the challenge. Ash: (CC) The last time I tried to climb straight up a wall, I landed on my butt. Brock: (CC) I’m afraid to be on the same team as Joe, because I think he might chicken out again, just like he did the other day. Tenchi: (CC) Things are never easy around here, are they? Izzy: (CC) My back’s still a little sore, so I’m not looking too forward to this challenge. Professor Oak leads the two teams to the makeshift mountain wall, which stands twenty feet tall. Ash: We have to climb all the way up there? Li: Finally. A real challenge. Tracey: Um... maybe I should reconsider? Oak: Okay, here’s how the challenge works. One at a time, each team will send one member climbing up this twenty foot wall, which as you see gets steeper as you go up, along with almost a foot of climbing horizontally before getting to the top. Upon reaching the top, you will undo the strap to your harness and hand it to the technicians up there, who will slide the strap back down the line to the next teammate, who will attach it to his harness and begin his ascent. The first team to get all eight members to the top, wins. Joe: What happens if we fall off? Oak: Well, if you lose your grip on the wall, you’ll be pulled away from it. You can either attempt to get back on the wall and continue climbing from where you fell off, or you can restart from the bottom again. Note that continuing to climb after falling, without restarting, will cost your team a one minute penalty, so try not to do it too often. Now, if there are no more questions, the technicians here will set you guys up. The said technicians go to work to find harnesses for all of the guys, making sure they all fit snugly against their bodies. Tracey: (breathing heavily) I think mine is a little too tight. Cody: (as the harness continues to slip off) I think mine is too big. Davis: (smiles) But mine is just right! After a few minutes, everyone is ready. The harnesses on Joe and Tracey are attached to the climbing straps. One at a time, all of the boys make their way over to a large dish full of chalk and stick their hands into it. They then rub the chalk over their hands and fingers, in order to give them better grip. Joe and Tracey then make their way over to the wall. They gulp as they see how high they have to climb. Joe: Ooh boy... Tracey: I don’t know about this one, Joe. Planning on backing out? Joe: Kinda. Why? Tracey: If you walk out on this challenge, I’ll go with you. Li: (shouting at both of them) You had better not be thinking of quitting, you two! The two of them sigh in dismay as they take another long look at the wall. All of a sudden, Professor Oak comes up from behind them. Oak: Are we ready, gentlemen? Tracey: Professor, what did I do to deserve this? Oak: Oh, nothing. Remember, I just oversee the challenges. I didn’t create them. Joe: (sarcastically) Oh, that is so reassuring right now. Tracey and Joe take their marks as the others line up behind them, in reverse order of how they were picked. Oak: On your mark! Get set! Go! With that, the two take off and start climbing up the wall. They both struggle up it. It seems that they are taking quite a bit of time. All of sudden, about halfway up, Tracey loses his grip and falls off the wall. He is now hanging in mid-air, with only the support rope keeping him from falling twenty feet to the ground below. Tracey: (yelling) Someone get me down from here! Cody: Tracey! Hurry up and get back down here! Tracey: I can’t! Matt: Come down here now before I go up there and rearrange your face! Brock: Come on, Joe! While Tracey’s out of sync! Joe climbs with all his might. As he gets close to the top, Tracey manages to work his way back to the bottom. He starts climbing up again with whatever strength he has left. Meanwhile, Joe finally reaches the top. He unlatches himself from the strap and carefully sends it back down the line to the ground, where Brock is waiting for. He straps himself in and immediately makes a beeline for the wall. Tenchi: That a way! Go for it, Brock! Brock, with some experience in rock climbing, catches up with and passes Tracey about sixty feet from the top. As Tracey continues to struggle, Brock pulls himself over the top. He rights himself before unlatching and sending the strap back down to the ground. He then high fives his teammate. Joe: Pretty good, Brock. Brock: I know. I knew this would be a piece of cake. At the bottom, Tai begins to attach the strap to his harness, but he fumbles it around a few times before finally getting it to stick. While that is happening, Tracey nears the top at last. He pulls himself along for what seems like eternity until he finally reaches the summit. As he does, he gets a standing ovation from Brock and Joe. Joe: It’s about time. Brock: Yeah. Good going, Tracey. Tracey: (collapsing on the spot) Yeah, whatever. Cody: (yelling) Tracey! Send the strap back down here! Tracey: (jumping up) Oh. Tracey gets himself unstrapped. He then sends the strap back down. Tai looks down for a scant second to see Tori quickly attaching the strap to his harness. He focuses back at the task at hand as he nears the halfway point. Tai continues to climb for the top. Tori, though, seems to be catching up as well. Their respective teams cheer them on from both at the top and on the ground. As they approach the top, Tori and Tai are neck and neck. Tori tags the top of the wall first and easily pulls himself over. Tai follows just seconds after, heavily breathing. Tai: Man, talk about deja vu. I hate getting passed in these challenges! With lightning speed, Tori unlatches and sends the strap back down to the next person in line, Ash. Tai is a bit slower, but Brock and Joe throw themselves into the fray, speeding up the relay back to the ground. As their strap reaches Davis at ground level, Ash walks over and begins to slowly climb up the wall. Davis joins him soon after. The teams watch tentatively as the two of them make their way up. Without warning, Ash falls off. His team groans as Ash floats his way back to the ground. But as Ash reaches the ground, Davis loses his grip and falls off the wall. * * * * * * * * * * Davis hangs in mid-air, beginning to motion to go downwards. But before Davis can make his way to the ground, though, Li starts yelling at him. Li: Davis! Get back on the wall! Forget about coming back down! TK: Are you sure, Li? He’ll be penalized for that! Li: Well, it’ll take him more than twice as long to make up that distance if he started over again. Izzy: (overhearing the conversation) Li makes a good point. Matt: Hey! Whose side are you on, anyway? Davis struggles, but eventually manages to swing back over and regain his footing on the wall. He continues his ascent, with Ash not too far behind. Both Davis and Ash decide to take their time, and it’s nearly ten minutes before they reach the top. Davis gets up there first. Upon climbing over the wall, his teammates quickly unlatch him from the strap and send it back down. On the ground, TK gets himself hooked up. As he’s doing that, Ash reaches the top. Professor Oak pulls out a stopwatch and begins assessing the one minute penalty on TK. While TK waits, the other team’s strap reaches the bottom. Ken gets himself strapped in. He then charges to the wall and starts climbing it like a madman. TK: (sweatdrops) You have got to be kidding me. Ken: (CC) No matter what, I’m going to get to the top! By the time TK is able to start his climb, Ken is halfway up and getting ever closer to the top. TK decides to attack the wall conservatively, but he’s not as slow as Ash and Davis were in the previous cycle. Ken climbs over the top less than a minute later. He quickly unstraps and sends the support line back to the ground, with Richie waiting this time. The race pretty much continues that way for quite awhile, with Cody’s team not really gaining any time on Li’s team. TK celebrates after reaching the top... TK: Yippee! And Richie follows suit just minutes later... Richie: I’m here! I’m at the top! Gary takes off from the bottom, about twelve feet in height ahead of the other team. Gary: (CC) This one’s for all the marbles! But using some strategy, Izzy cuts the gap between him and Gary in half on the way up, thanks in part to the specific hand and footholds he used. Izzy still wasn’t happy with himself, though. Izzy: (snaps his fingers) I almost had him. Tenchi and Matt give it their all as they attack the wall. Tenchi comes ever so close to falling off, but he manages to catch himself. He regains his composure and makes his way to the top in no time flat. Matt does his best to take advantage of Tenchi’s mistake. But it’s to no avail. Despite his best effort, Matt does not gain any time on Tenchi. That brings it down to the two team captains. Both of them being highly trained in martial arts, they already had the physical strength and mental strength to conquer the wall with no problem. The biggest difference was the gap between the two teams. By the time Cody started climbing the wall, Li was preparing to reach for the last few footholds before the top. Li reaches them easily as he pulls himself up and over the wall, sparking a merry celebration from his teammates. Meanwhile, Cody pushes himself to reach the top and at least finish. Davis realizes this and starts egging him on. Davis: Hey Cody! Hurry up! Cody: (struggling to pull himself up) This isn’t as easy as it looks! Eventually, Cody makes it to the top. He gets a congratulatory high five from everyone, including members of the other team. They all knew that that wall was not easy to climb. After twenty minutes, everyone has climbed their way back down to the ground. Professor Oak is waiting for them, getting ready to officially announce the winners. Oak: Well guys, I have to admit that today’s challenge was a tough one. But after all of that, I’m pleased to announce that the winners are the white team! Once again, Li and his teammates whoop and holler with joy. Oak: As per the rules, all of the members of the white team will get a hundred grand added to their personal jackpots. Congratulations once again, guys. The guys make their way back up to the mansion to relax or do whatever they wanted for the rest of the day. Night Twenty Six Tai heads to the videophone that night to once again try to reach someone. He dials the same number as he did the day before. The ‘Voice Only’ sign appears on the screen as the phone on the other end of the line begins to ring. This time, it only takes two rings before someone picks up. Mystery Voice: Hello? Tai: Hello! May I speak to Golden Girl, please? Mystery Voice: Who? Tai: Golden Girl. Her name is Golden Girl. Mystery Voice: Her name is Goal Den? Tai: No, it’s Golden Girl! Golden Girl! Mystery Voice: Golden Girl? Tai: Yes! Mystery Voice: Sorry, I don’t know any Golden Girls. Weren’t they just TV characters anyway? Tai: No! I mean, yeah, but. No, wait! The person I’m trying to reach is nicknamed Golden Girl. Mystery Voice: I see. Tai: So, can I talk to Golden Girl? Mystery Voice: Sorry, don’t know anyone by that name. Oh, I’ve got a guest. Gotta go! Tai: Wait! Please don’t hang... The phone line goes dead. Tai: Up. (snaps his fingers) Dang it! Tai hangs the receiver back up and stomps off back to his room. Day Twenty Seven Tai runs down the stairs as fast as he can as he hears the videophone ringing. As it comes into his field of vision, he sees Brock about to reach for the receiver. Tai pushes Brock aside and picks up the receiver. Brock: Hey! What’s the big idea? Tai: (putting a finger up to his mouth) Shhhhh! Brock: Fine. Brock walks off to finish preparing lunch as Tai speaks into the receiver. Tai: Hi! I’m glad I finally was able to reach you! Answering Voice: This is no time for jokes, Tai. Tai: (a little surprised) Kari? Why are you calling? Kari: (slightly irritated) Enough with the small talk. Where’s Davis? Tai: Davis? Why do you want to talk... Kari: (yelling loudly) That’s none of your business! Just get him on the phone! Tai: (cringing in pain) Ow! No need to yell! Kari: Just go get Davis! Tai: Fine, I’m going! Tai puts Kari on hold as he goes to look for Davis. Brock, who had been watching the entire exchange, was curious as to who Tai had been talking to. He releases the hold button on the phone and begins talking into the receiver. Brock: Hello, may I ask whom is calling? Kari: How dare you send me that swimsuit, Davis? What gave you the audacity to do something this insulting? Brock: (jumping back) Wait a minute, I’m not Davis! Kari: Don’t lie! I’m tired of you, Davis! I’m tired of these practical jokes of yours! Of all the nerve, sending me a bikini as a gift! Brock: A bikini? What bikini? Kari: There you go, lying again! Look Davis, I don’t know what’s gotten into you, but I’m sick and tired of it! Goodbye forever! And don’t expect a Christmas card from me this year, either! With that, Kari slams her receiver back on the phone, making Brock wince in pain over the noise. He hangs the receiver up and starts rubbing his right ear. Suddenly, Davis walks into the room. Davis: I can’t believe it! Kari’s calling me! This is the most wonderful day of my life! Brock: (still rubbing his ear) I wouldn’t say that if I were you. Davis: (sees the receiver is back in its place) What happened? I thought Kari was on hold! (turning to Brock) She didn’t hang up, did she? Brock: Well, sort of. Davis: Oh no! I must have taken too long! She probably thinks that she’s not important to me! Oh, the horror of it all! Davis walks off dejectedly before Brock can explain what really happened. Brock: Davis, wait! That’s not what happened! Davis: I know. But I don’t think I could take any more rejection from Kari... Night Twenty Seven Richie is all alone his bedroom, reading a love letter that Chelsea had sent to him. He sighs as he reads what she had written to him. Richie: (CC) I had no idea that Chelsea felt the exact same way! To think that we were going to send each other love letters at the same time! Richie continues to read along. He then blushes when he comes across one part in particular. Richie: (CC, reading the letter aloud) I want to be the cream of your crop, the sugar your Sugar Daddy, and the jelly with my peanut butter. Wow, she’s getting descriptive already. I didn’t know she was that crazy about me. Richie goes to work at writing a reply to Chelsea’s letter. Meanwhile, Tai is on his way to the videophone once again. But Matt steps in his way. Tai: Matt, get out of my way! I’ve got an important call to make! Matt: (pulling a piece of paper out of his pocket) Did you get a letter from Sora? Tai: (walking around Matt) Yeah. Why? Matt: Tai, did you read the letter? Tai: Of course I did! Matt: Don’t you understand the significance of the letter? Tai: Yeah, Sora said something about having to choose between either you or me for a boyfriend. So what? Matt: (as Tai reaches for the receiver) So what? Tai, is your brain running on empty tonight? Doesn’t this concern you at all? Tai: Of course it does. I just have other things on my mind, that’s all. (begins to dial a number) Like trying to reach this person I’ve been trying to talk to for days! Matt: And this person is more important to you than Sora? Tai: Yeah. Matt: And you don’t mind if I tell Sora that you’re not in love with her anymore? Tai: (not really paying attention) Yeah, sure. Now leave me alone... it’s ringing. Matt: (shrugs his shoulders) If you say so. As Matt walks off, someone answers on the other end of the phone line. Mystery Voice: Hello, how may I help you today? Tai: Yes, I need to talk to Golden Girl. And don’t tell me you don’t know who that is or that I’ve got the wrong number. I know she lives at this number! I’ve checked and double checked! So if she’s there, I want to speak with her right now! Mystery Voice: Golden Girl? Oh, Golden Girl! I’ll go get her. The person puts Tai on hold. Seconds later, the phone is answered by another person. Golden Girl: Hello, Golden Girl here. Who is this? Tai: Tai. Tai Kamiya, from Tokyo. Golden Girl: Tai? Is it really you? The ‘Voice Only’ screen disappears and a live picture of Golden Girl appears on the screen. Golden Girl happens to be Whitney, the gym leader of Goldenrod City! Whitney: You were supposed to call me a few days ago. I was beginning to get worried. Tai: Well, every time I called, someone said they didn’t know who Golden Girl was. Whitney: (giggles) You should’ve asked for my real name. There aren’t too many people who know my secret screen name, you know. Tai: Oh. Sorry about that. Whitney: Anyway, let’s get down to business. What’s this surprise you have for me? Tai: (smiles) Allow me to show you. Tai pulls a small box out of his pocket. He opens it. Whitney’s eyes shine as she spots what is in it... a 14K golden necklace! Whitney: Wow! That’s so beautiful! Tai: Yeah! I think it’ll fit you perfectly. Whitney: I bet it will. Tai: Here, give me your address and I’ll send it right to you. Whitney: Okay. My address is 208 Main Street, Goldenrod City, Johto Region, Japan. Tai: (writing it down) Got it. Thanks, Whitney! Whitney: No, thank you! (blows Tai a kiss) Talk to you later! Tai: Okay! See ya! Tai hangs up the phone and smiles. He then slips the box back into his pocket and starts heading up to his room, happy that his girlfriend was going to get what she so rightly deserved. End Episode Thirteen Oak: (VO) On our next episode... Gary: A talent show? Of all the stupid... Oak: (VO) Ahem... anyway, the guys showcase their fabulous talents! Tracey: I’m sure the audience will love my talent! Tenchi: I don’t think the judges will think that drawing good Pokémon pictures is interesting. Tai: That’s not fair! Matt: Hey, what can I say? I’m good. Oak: (VO) Which team will come out on top in the sixth physical challenge? Izzy: We just had a physical challenge yesterday? Is another one really necessary? Ash: I came here to show off! Oak: (VO) The judges will have to decide their fate: two familiars... Lorelei: It only takes a little jiggling to amuse me. Flint: Only rock solid acts will score high. Oak: (VO) And a very special guest... Brock: (blushes) Wow, she’s cute! Tori: I heard she’s taken already. Oak: (VO) Next time, on Roomies! Copyright Date: 9/6/01
