Poor Bulgaria.
In the interests of creating a true Hetalia World Cup, all of the 32
participants must have had some involvement in the official media. While
Australia didn't have much of a leg to stand on, Bulgaria was represented in
the anime, virtually alongside Egypt. So he's in, right?
But Egypt has appeared in other spots off and on, while other minor players like Holland and
Hong Kong have significant appearances and mentions elsewhere. If there was one more spot,
he'd probably get it. But a 33-team World Cup just doesn't work.
Bulgaria didn't protest... much. Especially when the proposed solution was a
two-leg playoff with top seed Holland. Bulgaria had a fairly good team,
but he wasn't Holland good.
He wasn't even photogenic or personable enough to get a job as an announcer or
a reporter. After that whole "attacking Italy" incident, Germany didn't trust
him enough to appoint him as an official, despite the need for a fourth later
on.
He ended up on security detail.
The job was dull: Make sure no unauthorized persons entered the village.
Escort participants to the airport shuttles. Make sure Prussia doesn't get out.
Today he also got to pick up a suspicious package. Fun.
It's a large box with a scribble on it. It read "To Germany, From
Port-of-Spain." From certain angles, it appears to move at times. Bulgaria's
first thought is to call the bomb squad and detonate the sucker. But that
Port-of-Spain part poses a problem: it's the capital of Trinidad & Tobago, a
small island nation in the Caribbean and a fluke participant in the 2006 World
Cup. While whatever persona Trinidad & Tobago took wouldn't have credentials as
a Hetalia nation, he/she technically has access to the event.
Grabbing a stick, Bulgaria forces the box open. He immediately regrets it.
 |
Hey, thanks for letting me in,
Mister! Just so you know, this means you recognize my
country now. |
As Sealand skips off into the village, Bulgaria shakes his head.
If Sealand had a team, odds are he'd be in the tournament well
before Bulgaria. So he doesn't see much problem in letting the kid
loose upon Germany.
Apparently, Sealand does have
a
national team. Obviously it's not in the game so he wouldn't be in the World
Cup, but still... Sealand has a national team. Figure that one out.
Day 6
Belarus vs. China - America vs. Ukraine
Germany vs. Greece
Australia and Cuba prove that canon and non-canon characters can exist.
 |
G'day everybody! Day 6 of the Hetalia
World Cup and it's time to close out the opening matches
for each team. |
 |
That's right, after today we'll have
seen all 32 nation and get that much closer to sorting
things out. |
 |
Today Group H takes center stage with
two great matches- Belarus-China and America-Ukraine |
 |
And we return to Group A as Greece
tries to get back on track against our host. All three
of these games could be fun to watch. |
 |
Right, even our opener. The two later
matches probably stand out the most, but there's a lot
to enjoy with a match between Belarus and China. |
 |
You bet. They're not known for having
strong football teams, but they can have moments. China
for one qualified for the 2002 World Cup, even if he did
stink up the joint. |
 |
China's pretty efficient, but doesn't
have a lot of flair on the pitch. Meanwhile, Belarus
isn't all that skilled, but let's face it- she's a
bloomin' psycho. Never know what she might do. |
 |
My kind of gal. Not to take anything
from Vietnam, who's at the stadium with China. |
Backstage, Vietnam interviews China.
 |
Skills-wise, Belarus is probably your
best chance for a win. At the same time, she is
decidedly scary. How do you get over her intimidating
nature in this match? |
 |
Lots of planning. Good teamwork. And
lots of fan support- my people are here in droves today
and they're looking forward to a good match. |
 |
I imagine keeping your head together
will be key. |
 |
Isn't it always? No matter the
opponent and no matter the situation, staying focused is
critical. |
 |
What does Russia make of this match? |
 |
He said he'd give me a special treat
if I beat her and she went away... I'm not sure if
that's incentive or not. |
 |
My guess is that it is, but your
mileage may very. Good luck out there. |
And with that, the match begins!
|
Day 6-
Munich |
Match 15 |
Group H |
 |
BELARUS |
vs. |
CHINA |
 |
No surprise- Belarus is the early aggressor in the match. China is
well-prepared on defense and stalls all of her efforts for the first couple
minutes. Still, despite the fruitless effort, she is relentless.
 |
Ball's cleared out but she gets it
back and a longball right back into the box! She
collects it and fires! IN... but the offside flag's up. |
 |
Yikes. It's the right call... way
Belarus is glaring, I'm surprised Seychelles was gutsy
enough to make it, but it's the right call. Still, China's really
going to need to be on his toes. |
Over the next several minutes, the difference between each team is
established as China holds onto the ball. He engineers good paths forward,
making sure he has help at all times. Belarus gets antsy without the ball and
China is able to work with this.
 |
China looking for something again.
Going for a cross here! Has someone in position... nope,
Belarus heads it clear... |
 |
Oh, but right at China's head! Sharp
header! Right at the goal! Belarus just tips it over the
crossbar! Scary stuff there. |
 |
Oi, this could be a fun one to watch. |
It certainly is, but it doesn't lead to anything productive. While Belarus
continues driving at China, he's able to take care of it. Meanwhile, he doesn't
have nearly as much luck advancing on her. Things get bogged down for a while.
 |
Not a lot going on as we approach the
twenty minute mark. China evades a tackler at midfield,
passes up, then quickly to an end... then the middle.
Approaches the box! Fires it hard to the outside!
China's wide open to set up the cross! It's away!
Header's deflected! Corner kick China! |
 |
That would have been pretty. Give
China credit for opening things up like that. Some fine
passing right there. |
The possession fails, but the spirit lives on!
 |
Another offensive for China. Into the
box. Nope, cleared away. Belarus dribbles it up... oi,
it's stolen! China gets it, passes forward to the edge
of the box. Shot! GOAL! Brilliant shot finds the corner
of the net and China's on the board!! |
 |
Wow! Belarus just a little impatient
to get the ball out and just a tad careless there. Good
steal, good pass and damn, that was a rocket into the
net! |

20' - GOAL (CHN) - China 1, Belarus 0
Despite a stadium full of Chinese fans, China knows better than to enjoy it.
He rushes back to midfield and prepares to more. He does make the mistake of
looking at Belarus though. She may not have her knife, but she is glaring
daggers at him.
She's noticeably more aggressive when she takes possession.
 |
We've gone full circle after that
goal. Belarus is really pushing forward and testing
China's defense again. He's holding up well, but it's
making him sweat for sure. |
 |
Belarus kicks it out to try again.
Short pass up, then she charges forward! Finds a hole
through two defenders! Right at the goal! Keeper up
to meet her. Flicks it past him! GOAL! Just a short tap
that escapes the keeper and evens up the score. |
 |
Well, as relentless as she's been, it
just took that one split second opening and she pounced
on it. Even then, I don't know how she got it through.
Either way, a fast equalizer for Belarus. |

22' - GOAL (BLR) - China 1, Belarus 1
And here's the thing- she doesn't stop. Her driven play continues and forces
China to spend that much more effort defending his goal. Right away, she gets
another shot off that requires a diving save.
 |
Keeper sends it all the way to
midfield, but Belarus is right there to get it! China
just can't advance! |
 |
Nope. Meanwhile, Belarus charges
again and ooh... hard tackle from China brings her down.
Seychelles blows the whistle and I smell a booking. |
 |
*holding up a yellow card* I
know you want to stop her, but that's no way to do it. |
 |
Sorry, sorry. |
 |
Yep. Meanwhile Belarus doesn't want
to wait for the restart. She wants to kick it in early. |
 |
Somehow I don't think Seychelles is
going to stop her. If Belarus wants to start before
China's clear... find by me. |
Rather than use organized attacks, Belarus attacks directly,
attacking perceived soft spots in the defense. She finds several
throughout the rest of the half, but China's keeper does a good job
saving any shots that may arise. His defenders also get the ball
clear and prevent second chances. It just doesn't stop the Belarus
machine.
 |
Belarus charging forward again. Stops
now for a long pass. |
 |
Half-cross, half-longball. Up and
over to the edge of the box, but China's there... |
 |
No he's not! Belarus sneaks around
him! Kicks it from midair! IT'S IN!! Just a stunning
goal to give Belarus a 2-1 lead!! |
 |
She's wearing him down! He was ready
to collect it, but she snuck past him and got off a
tremendous kick that curled past the keeper and in the
goal. Holy moly! |

37' - GOAL (BLR) - Belarus 2, China 1
At least China gets the ball back. If anything, he just wants to keep it away
from Belarus for the rest of the half. He tests an attack briefly, and gets
dragged down in front of the box for his efforts. Seychelles faces her fear and
books Belarus for that.
This kind of chaos continues in Belarus's box, with lots of kicks and jabs
back and forth between the two sides, but she muscles her way out of trouble
time and time again. Halftime approaches with neither side getting a lot in for
shots.
 |
At the 45 minute mark now. Seychelles
says two minutes of stoppage time. |
 |
China's got it near the corner.
Trying to find something to do with it. |
 |
Under pressure, he fires a long
cross. All the way to the other side, but he gets it
back and sends it straight up! There's a header! Off the
crossbar! Second chance headed IN! China ties it back
up! |
 |
Helluva job by China! Gave it one
last shot and goes tied into the locker room! Way to
stick with that one. |
 |
Although there's still another minute
of stoppage and this is Belarus. |
 |
True... true... let's ride this out.
We saw what she did last time China scored. |
45+1' - GOAL (CHN) - Belarus 2, China 2
Actually, the whistle blows before Belarus can get it all the way down.
Halftime!
 |
Well, well, well... Belarus throwing
her muscle around the pitch but China's kept his
composure. Late goal and it's all square at the half. |
 |
I know. We expected a pretty even
match. Not sure if that's what we got but the score says
so. Both sides playing it their own way and getting
results from it. |
 |
At the same time, we've seen flaws on
both sides. So what do we expect from the second half?
Do they stick with their plans or make adjustments? |
 |
Well, Belarus is going to stick to
her guns. That kind of killer instinct is her only hope,
really. China might be hard to predict. He might try to
step it up a notch and I don't know if that's the best
idea for him. |
 |
Guess we have to get back to the
action and find out! |
China kicks off the second half, and he clearly does pick up the pace a
little. He's not as reckless as Belarus, but he does try to threaten more. He
gets a few shots in the opening minutes that Belarus has to fight to take care
of.
Belarus, of course, is still psycho. When she gets the ball, it's straight
vertical for her.
 |
Belarus into the box! Shot! Knocked
away for a corner kick. |
 |
Early on, both sides fighting hard.
Let's see whose defenses crack first. |
 |
Good question. Belarus not as bad on
defense as her attitude suggests. |
 |
No, she holds her own on defense. She
just doesn't care for it much. |
 |
Anyway, there's the corner! Belarus
is there for the header! Defender tips it... away from
the keeper and in! GOAL! |
 |
Oh, what a break for Belarus! China's
defender tried to clear that shot, but could only
deflect it. Ball took a new course away from the keeper
and trickles into the net. Wow. |
50' - GOAL (BLR) - Belarus 3, China 2
China resumes the attack again, and maintains careful possession of the ball
for a while, but his next few attacks are gobbled up on Belarus's side. He keeps
things on her side most of the time, but he doesn't have any good chances to
score. That's when he notices something terrifying:
She's focusing on defense. Her midfielders are playing back and guarding his
every move. They're just watching and waiting.
 |
What do you call this? |
 |
Mine. |
 |
Belarus challenges! Stolen! Passes up
and past the defense! She's got a breakaway! Shot! Oh, a
great diving save! Close call there. |
 |
She was sitting back and waiting for
that. Patient Belarus is scarier than Berserk Belarus. |
China gulps, but tries again to pass it forward. He is
unsuccessful and Belarus takes over.
 |
Belarus moving forward. Not quite as
aggressive as before, but she's getting down nicely.
There's a cross. There's a header! There's a goal! Swift
counter-attack sets up a nice play and Belarus has taken
command! |
 |
And not in the expected way! She
seems to be doing the right thing and nursing her lead.
Seems like she knows just when to charge forward though.
Great timing on her part. |
63' - GOAL (BLR) - Belarus 4, China 2
China looks at Belarus again before kicking off. She's still glaring daggers
at him. Now he's scared. Even moreso now that she's not more aggressive.
At least he has a little more luck with his next couple possessions.
 |
China desperate for anything now.
Hey, good through ball! There we go! Gets past the
defender for a breakaway. |
 |
Only a length ahead of her. Get a
move on! |
 |
Shot taken! No! Easy save for the
keeper. |
 |
Come on! Gotta finish those. Of all
things, I think it's her patience that's starting to get
China flustered. |
That does seem to be the case. China is able to cross it in and
gets a shot off, but it sails wide.
Meanwhile, Belarus is playing a disciplined defensive game, going into a
frenzy only when she anticipates a steal. China doesn't give up the ball that
often, so it doesn't come up much. Ten minutes go by with little action from
either side.
 |
China passes and Belarus charges
forward! Steals it and she's on the move! Past the
defense for a breakaway! Shot's knocked away for a
corner kick. |
 |
Even on defense, she plays for the
kill. It's insane. I love it. |
 |
Both sides get a moment to run down
and set up for the corner. Belarus squares the ball and
it's away! Curls out and she gets off the header! Off
the crossbar! Falls to the grass and China's defense
clears it away in time! |
 |
And look at that. She furiously
charges back to defend before China can set anything up.
This is something else. |
China is able to penetrate the defense every once in a while, but
can't come through with the right shot when it counts. Belarus
stifles him as the game reaches the final stages. China's large
fanbase is starting to let him have it. His next possession is
stolen.
 |
Another steal and there she goes!
It's a breakaway, but China's right behind her. Gonna be
a tough shot... no, she passed it back! Teammate's there
for an open shot!! Open net goal!! |
 |
This is beyond a restless aggression
now. Belarus is just destroying China in every way
possible. |
 |
Not to get too far ahead of
ourselves, but America might even have trouble
containing her! |
81' - GOAL (BLR) - Belarus 5, China 2
China is being devoured by Belarus and eviscerated by his fans. He plays on,
but this one is definitely over.
 |
China earns a corner kick. If he
can't connect here, he might as well play keepaway for
the rest of the game to avoid Poland's fate. |
 |
It's up and away! Belarus clears it
out. Dribbles up and sends it downfield! She's got a
man! Open breakaway! Shoots! Scores!! One more for
Belarus and it's now 6-2! |
 |
China is just stunned. He's dead on
the floor and Belarus will stab him until the final
whistle. Just ouch. |

85' - GOAL (BLR) - Belarus 6, China 2
China is now catatonic and Belarus is trampling over him. He only
keeps her out of goal because she kicks the ball directly into his face. Game
over. Seychelles has to drag China's corpse off the pitch.
 |
Hey, China... sure you gonna be okay? |

Vietnam gets the delightful task of interviewing Belarus.
 |
Um... good win? |
 |
One rival gone. Two to go. Then no
one will be left to marry Brother but me. |
 |
Uh... what? |
 |
China was too close to Brother. He
had to go. |
 |
Oh, uh, okay... but what about your
next opponent? America and Russia have always been at
each other's throats. They even dragged me into it once.
It was not pleasant. |
 |
America will pay for trying to hurt
Brother. So will Sister for deserting him. They'll all
pay. |
 |
Well, okay... care to comment about
your play today? You looked very sharp. |
|
|
She holds up her knife. |
 |
This is sharp too. |
 |
Um... thanks for sharing! You're free
to go! Great win! |
|
|
Belarus walks off. Vietnam resumes
normal breathing patterns. |
 |
And to think Taiwan begged me to take
this game because she didn't want to deal with China. |
Back to the studio. Cuba is suspiciously absent.
 |
Oi, that was something else. Closely
met for the first half, but Belarus dominated the rest
of the way and left China in her dust. If she can play
that scary, she might indeed cause problems for America
and Ukraine. |
 |
*offscreen* What's really
scary is that if she can follow through with her plan to
kill China, America and Ukraine, all countries that
Russia has a history with... her first opponent in
the knockouts will probably be Poland. |
 |
That... is scary indeed. Where the
hell were you? |
|
|
Cuba sits down wearing lots of
Ukrainian blue
and yellow. |
 |
Getting ready for the next match.
|
 |
You're supposed to pretend to be
objective here. |
 |
Nah, if I said anything nice about
America, folks would think I'm a phony. Besides, if I
was really gung ho about cheering for Ukraine, I'd
inflate the jersey. |
|
|
He demonstrates, squeezing a bulb
under the desk. His chest inflates a little. He
deflates it. |
 |
These have been selling like crazy
downstairs. Those stupid horns in South Africa ain't got
nothing on these babies. |
 |
Don't suppose you have any useful
commentary about the next match? |
 |
Yeah. Ukraine doesn't act like it,
but she's a healthy farm girl and a downright good
footballer. Just not one of the
elites, which is why I'm so excited. Calling America one
of the elites is kind of a joke too. Should be a good
match between two teams one step below greatness. |
 |
I see your point there. America's
been qualifying consistently lately, but really spotty
when he gets to the tournament. He reached the knockouts
when he hosted in '94 and in Korea 2002, and let's not
forget his upset win over Spain last year. But other
times it looks like he's not giving his all. You can
tell soccer's not his top priority. |
 |
Not mine either, but at least I have
an excuse: I suck at it. He could be really good if he
took it seriously. He just prefers other sports. |
 |
Well, soccer's the only game
in Leipzig tonight, so let's head down for kickoff. |
|
Day 6-
Leipzig |
Match 16 |
Group H |
 |
AMERICA |
vs. |
UKRAINE |
 |
Thing is, Cuba's not the only one who's aware of America's disinterest in
soccer. Germany is too, so the neutral fans wouldn't mind seeing him fall on his
face. However, his warm-ups are energetic and fierce. Ukraine works hard too,
but seeing him drill practice shots into the net already has her flustered.
Their anthems play, Cameroon blows his whistle and America grins at her before
kicking off.
Even before kickoff, her back is to the wall and America takes advantage
early with a full attack. Her nerves get to her early as she struggles to handle
the ball on defense. He gets several opportunities and the first five minutes
are in his attacking third.
 |
Sends it into the box from an angle-
America has a breakaway! Angle's bad so he takes a quick
shot! Ukraine saves it, but can't hold on. It's a
corner. |
 |
No surprise early on that America's
trying to scare her into submission. He almost needs a
goal here because he can't keep this pace for ninety
minutes and I'm sure Ukraine will settle down
eventually. |
 |
Corner's away. It's up towards the
back post. America with the header! No, it's wide! Some
mercy for Ukraine as it's a goal kick. |
Ukraine sends it downfield and manages to keep possession long
enough to calm herself down. In the process, she has subconsciously
moved the ball forward. Realizing that she's suddenly on the attack,
she makes the most of it. America is there to clear her tries, but
he's not much better at it than she was. Ukraine gets a number of
second chances as well.
 |
America goes forward, but Ukraine
gets it back. She charges ahead! The devil's she
thinking? Two defenders right there to squeeze her out,
possession lost... |
 |
No, she's through! |
 |
Wait, no- she is! She's behind the
defenders. The shot! Deflected off the keeper- GOAL!
Ukraine somehow slips past the defense and puts it in! |
 |
What the hell kinda defense was
that?! Kinda like Turkey's first goal against Lithuania.
Looks like America's got her bottled up, then she busts
out and scores one for the good guys! |

7' - GOAL (UKR) - Ukraine 1, America 0
While America tries attacking again to no avail, Ukraine is stumbling over
opportunities. It's not that she's counter-attacking, but America's so hasty to
transition into his offense that he fails to secure the ball at midfield.
Ukraine steals it frequently and can't help but find open players in front of
her. She gets a couple shots, but nothing that connects.
After this happens a couple times, America stops and is a little more
deliberate with the ball while he looks for something. He sees something, smiles
and kicks it ahead. Shame Ukraine spotted it too.
 |
Ukraine reads the pass and jumps
after it. Good steal! Passes forward for a breakaway!
Keeper just manages to tip away a shot. That was almost
2-nil there. |
 |
Give America credit for stopping for
a sec to scan the defense for weaknesses, but give
Ukraine more credit for doing the same thing. She
spotted her own hole and plugged it just in time. |
 |
She does get a corner kick out of it.
It's off and it's a deep one to the back post. She heads
it back to the near post! Finds the net! Two-nil! |
 |
Wow, all those defensive lapses by
America and Ukraine ends up scoring on a perfect set
piece! Sent to the back, headed to the front... nobody
could have stopped that one! |
12' - GOAL (UKR) - Ukraine 2, America 0
America keeps at it, but the story becomes Ukraine's excellent play at
midfield. When America gets too fast, Ukraine's able to steal it and get
easy counters. When he slows down, she can step back and guard his players. Even
though America dominates the possession for the next ten minutes, he's not
getting any good shots. Ukraine doesn't score, but she has the better
opportunities, doubly so with America's sloppy defense.
Finally, fifteen minutes after Ukraine's second goal, he spots something down
the sides.
 |
America down the sideline now.
Finally, he's got some running room. |
 |
Took him forever to find somebody
unmarked, but Ukraine's trying to fix that now. |
 |
Ukraine applies pressure but he
crosses it into the box. Collects it! Tries to get
around Ukraine! She forces a shot right at the keeper.
Easy save for Ukraine. |
 |
Best opportunity America's had in a
while and Ukraine still shuts it down before he can get
a good look. That never really troubled her. |
 |
I think you meant to say it wasn't a
troubling threat. Of course it troubled
her. What doesn't? |
While Ukraine continues to see some chances on offense, America's
persistence starts to get to her a bit and loosen the defenses. He
passes up for a great shot that requires an excellent save.
His next attack is more easily thwarted.
 |
Keeper shuts down that attack. Rolls
it up to her defender. |
 |
Starting to see America get a little
closer, but it's still a long way from the opening
minutes. His striker pressuring the defender now and oh,
he stole it! |
 |
America with the steal! Runs forward,
between the defenders, open shot! GOAL! America wasn't
ready to close the book on that attack and engineers a
score! |
 |
Well, that's one way to force
yourself back into this one. Ukraine had full control
over the match and America literally steals his way into
the net. |
 |
Question now is how much that rattles
her. |
 |
Oh yeah. Still plenty of time before
the half and you know she's nervous. |

33' - GOAL (USA) - Ukraine 2, America 1
For a moment, it seems like Ukraine would be all right.
 |
All right... calm down... I still
have a lead... I just need to attack again. His defense
isn't as strong. I can get that goal back. |
Or not... Ukraine does attack and gets an excellent breakaway, but America's
keeper dives on top of the ball, jumps to his feet and confidently guns it
downfield.
 |
All right! Now we're cooking! |
 |
Oh no! |
America is back in full attack mode and Ukraine is back in panic mode. Her
defense doesn't seem nearly as threatening any more as he gets several looks at
goal. He isn't able to score, however, and halftime approaches.
 |
America charging back downfield!
Really trying to tie it up before halftime. Getting
close to the box now and a sliding challenge. Foul
called. Could be a booking here. |
 |
It would be the most forgivable
booking in history. |
|
|
Cameroon holds up a yellow card.
Ukraine shrivels in guilt and tries to help America up. |
 |
Yes, indeed. More importantly, a free
kick for America. Could be gunning for the net here. |
 |
Ukraine putting a whole rack of
players on the wall to stop it. About twenty-five yards
out. Very dangerous moment here. |
 |
America knows just what he wants to
do, just waiting for the go-ahead from Cameroon. Whistle
blows and he charges! Kick's away! Over the wall! Oh,
just over the net! Didn't drop fast enough. |
 |
Ooh, that did drop though. Would have
been good from thirty. |
With that bit of drama, the half ends with Ukraine barely nursing
her one-goal lead. She can't wait to get into the locker room for a
breather.
 |
Hard to gauge these sorts of things
given America's inconsistency in tournaments, but the
play so far seems about right to me. |
 |
It does, yeah. America seems to love
giving up goals early and certainly could have done
better to keep Ukraine out of the net on both her goals. |
 |
Right, both goals coming off second
chances. As did America's. |
 |
Yeah, but Ukraine didn't just hand it
over. America nabbed that one out of thin air, and
that's the kind of stuff we'll probably see more of in
the second half. On top of the shock-and-awe offense we
saw from him at the start and finish of half one. |
 |
How about Ukraine though? We know
what America's going to do, but what about her? |
 |
I'll be honest, I'm worried about
Ukraine. It would be so like her to focus only on
defense, but from what we've seen so far, that won't
work. She's winning the midfield game and America's
weakness is on defense. If Ukraine doesn't play to those
advantages, she is in trouble. |
 |
Well, let's send it back for the
second half. Taiwan's on the field with Ukraine. |
 |
Thanks, Australia. Now Ukraine, one
of the crazy things about this game is that it never
seems to be a stalemate. Even though America's winning
the possession battle, it's like either you're in
complete control or he is. What will you do to take
charge more consistently in the second half? |
 |
I really don't know. He has a very
good team and trying to stop him all game is very
difficult. I know I have to keep thinking about scoring,
but attacking America is very scary when you know what
he can do if he gets the ball back before you're ready. |
 |
Seems like once you get into your
attack, he's not as prepared to handle it. |
 |
Same goes for me too, Taiwan. You're
not on the field when he's in full attack mode. I can't
believe he's only scored once. |
 |
Well, good luck in the second half. |
 |
Thank you. I have a feeling I'm going
to need it. |
As the second half begins, both sides look to set up quick
chances, but the defenses seem to catch up every time it looks like
someone will have a breakaway. Ukraine gets a good shot off, but
America is able to save it.
As the half rolls along, America does do a better job dodging Ukraine's
midfield challenges. He isn't able to put on a bit of offensive show quite yet,
her defenders still prevent that, but he's not being swallowed up in midfield
anymore.
It doesn't mean he's entirely secure with the ball either.
 |
America trying to advance the ball,
but Ukraine gets a foot in there, back to America! He
pops it up, but Ukraine heads it, the sends it to the
side. She's unmarked! Heads into the box. There's the
shot! Diving save by the keeper! He knocks it away and
America's defenders take care of the rest. |
 |
Both defenses have been playing much
better so far in the half, but that was a close call.
Not too many chances for either side, but Ukraine seems
to be getting most of them. |
These quick chances seem to be all Ukraine's getting, though. America is
really controlling the ball now. Ukraine does well to guard him closely at
defense, but while she's keeping him away from the box, she's not taking the
ball away. When she does, she sends it downfield fast enough to cause a scare,
but America's defenders are right on top of it and get it right back up to
midfield.
 |
Ukraine's really stepping up on
defense now, trying to close up shop. |
 |
I'll admit that I had doubts about
that, but it seems to be working. America's had the ball
most of the half, but he's not seeing the chances like
he did before. |
 |
Oh, but here's one. America passes it
up into the box. Past the defense. Striker there for the
one-two! Diving save by Ukraine! |
 |
Wow! Ukraine's keeper hasn't been
troubled much this half, but takes care of that quick
one-two shot! |
Ukraine sends it deep and feels brave enough to try controlling
it herself for a bit.
 |
Ukraine advancing slowly now. |
 |
She's clearly hesitant, but she's
definitely looking for something. |
 |
She may have found it! Finds the
angle and feeds her striker! Keeper knocks away the shot
with another great save! Right to his defender. Chested
down... little too hard! Goes too far, right to Ukraine!
She collects... shoots... GOAL! Oh, just a slightly
misplayed ball and Ukraine goes up 3-1! |
 |
Slightly is right! Looked like
America was all over that attack, but he couldn't quite
get that ball down with his chest and it rolls right to
Ukraine who cleans up. Unbelievable! |
 |
See Ukraine doesn't have that
problem. Nice soft landing area when she chests it down.
It's like a pillow. |

65' - GOAL (UKR) - Ukraine 3, America 1
Ukraine seems to feel a lot better about her chances now. After America's
next possession, she finds a seam and tries to add another one. America is just
barely able to stop it.
He sends it back downfield, but her defense is ready for him.
 |
America holding it on Ukraine's side,
but just can't find anything. Ukraine steps up to cover
him. America passes, knocked away! Ball gets loose and
his midfielder charges in! Swoops, grabs it and
plunges for the box! Ukraine puts the pressure on but he
fires off a shot! FINDS THE NET! GOAL! |
 |
Wait, what just happened?! |
 |
Ukraine is stunned! A couple
defenders got out of position trying to get the loose
ball but America swoops in like an eagle, flies past
them and finds his nest! We're back to a one goal game! |
 |
The imagery is so beautiful I could
just throw up. |
69' - GOAL (USA) - Ukraine 3, America 2
Now there's no way in hell Ukraine is leaving her shell. She does her best to
close down shop and weather the storm for the last twenty minutes. She'll
venture forth for a quick charge when the situation's right, but America still
keeps enough defense in position to deal with it.
Ukraine is a nervous wreck, but she denies him any good chances for ten
minutes. America doesn't seem to care. He continues to fight on, grinning the
whole time.
 |
Approaching the ten minute mark.
America getting urgent, but not in a panic yet. Kicks it
to the sides. Crosses in! The header! Off the crossbar
and pops up! Keeper punches it out, but America gets it-
no, Ukraine stops him. Shot's blocked. Ukraine gets it
back and clears it away! Close call! |
 |
Something tells me this is going to
be a hell of an ending. |
Ukraine does her best to keep the ball and move forward slowly
and cautiously. America's defense prevents her from getting
anywhere, but it eats up the clock.
Just not all of it.
 |
America gets it back and hustles down
the sideline! His offense is in formation, waiting for
the cross! Nope, Ukraine marks him in time. He passes to
the top of the box. One-two shot! Off the defender's
head! Towards the goal away from the keeper! Oh, bounces
wide! Ukraine dodges another bullet! |
 |
Caramba! Almost a repeat from a goal
Belarus scored earlier today. Keeper dove to stop it, but
redirected by her own player. What a helpless feeling!
That missed the post by inches! |

Ukraine marks America hard in the final few minutes, a risky tactic that
pressures him from setting anything fancy up. Entering the final minute, she
gets it back and it looks like she's in the clear.
 |
Ukraine crosses midfield, doing
everything she can to keep it away from America. |
 |
Why won't that clock tick faster?! |
 |
Passes up and stolen! America reads
and intercepts and sends a longball up to his man! Gets
up as far as the defense lets him! Rifles a shot! Diving
save by Ukraine! Oh, another close shave that could have
tied it. |
 |
Someone's smiling on Ukraine tonight!
Can she close it? |
She gets it back up and keeps it away from America long enough.
The whistle blows and she falls to the ground in tears. Despite the
cheers from the crowd, all Ukraine can do is stare up at the
twilight and cry. An exhausting effort, but she has done it.

 |
Definitely a tough loss, America.
Certainly not for lack of effort though. |
 |
It's a good workout, I'll give you
that much. There were a couple bad breaks, but I kicked
some butt out there today! I'll totally get 'em next
time! |
 |
You pretty much have to. It's going
to be hard to advance if you can't win your remaining
matches. |
 |
I'm not worried. Ukraine stepped up
and beat me, but I won't let it happen again! Especially
against the likes of Belarus and China. |
 |
I don't know... Belarus looked very
strong today. It's hard to predict. |
 |
There is no way America will be
defeated, even in soccer! |
 |
Well, better luck next time. Back to
you guys! |
 |
Thanks, Taiwan. What a match that
was! |
 |
Wow! Back and forth all game. Gotta
admire Ukraine gutting that one out. She's tougher than
she looks. |
 |
Right. And finally another big upset.
After Canada beat Japan, it's been very much according
to the odds lately. |
 |
Good stuff. And with the way Belarus
looked, America could have a harder time reaching the
next round than we thought. |
 |
And a draw with Belarus won't do
either. He'll need three points from her, as well as a
result against China in the finale. |
 |
They're selling giant novelty knives
downstairs too. Not as many Belarus fans around, but
I'll have to pick one up. |
 |
Anyway, getting into the nightcap
with another guy with his back to the wall- Greece. |
 |
Yep. Openers are over with. Time to see how well teams adjusted. Greece is a good case in
point, because he just fell over in his first match. |
 |
Indeed. He lost to Russia 4-1, mostly
on defensive miscues. And now he has to go up against
the host nation. And Germany looked solid in his first
game, a 3-2 win over Hungary. |
 |
Yeah, not an enviable spot to be in
for Greece. Russia exposed all of his flaws, Germany
knows how to take advantage of them and pretty much the
entire crowd in Dortmund will be cheering on the
Mannschaft. |
 |
Not to mention that a win would
almost certainly put Germany in the knockouts. Let's
head to Dortmund to survey the damage! |
|
Day 6-
Dortmund |
Match 17 |
Group A |
 |
GERMANY |
vs. |
GREECE |
 |
Germany is mechanical as always in his warm up routine. Greece is
awake at least, but kicking the ball around pretty casually. After
some random dribbling, he fires a shot into the corner of his
unguarded net. It goes in. He nods a bit and stretches out.
One thing we are missing is a referee. Germany stops his routine. He really
has bigger things to worry about, but he is the host and this is something of a
problem.
The good news is that he sees Thailand. The bad news is that he's sitting in
the stands with a wurst and a beer mug. Germany marches up to him.
 |
Thailand! Aren't you supposed to be
officiating? |
 |
Nope! Got the day off! Thanks for
that, by the way. Five matches in a row is pretty
grueling. |
 |
Who gave you the day off?! |
 |
Um... you did. You're running the
tournament. |
 |
Yes, but since I'm playing as well, I
do not designate officials. I put Cameroon in charge of
that. |
 |
Oh, well there's four games a
day next week anyway, so I guess he figured we'd give
the new kid a run now and give us a breather. |
 |
Who? |
 |
*pulls out a sheet of paper*
Let's see... ooh, I've got Holland's match tomorrow...
uh, Trinidad & Tobago. |
 |
Who on Earth is he? Or she? Or they? |
 |
I think it's a Caribbean nation, so
you'd have to ask Cuba. |
 |
Germany! We're ready to start the
match! |
|
|
Sealand is standing behind
Germany, but Germany ignores him. |
 |
Ah, there he is. Off you go. |
|
|
Germany turns around and is forced
to pay attention to Sealand. |
 |
You aren't Trinidad & Tobago! |
 |
I know, but I just fudged my flag a
little bit and they let me right in! And when I told
them I qualified for the World Cup in '06, Cameroon let
me officiate! |
 |
You didn't qualify for the World Cup
in '06! You don't even have a football team! In fact,
this stadium is bigger than your alleged nation! |
 |
Aw, come on, Germany! I promise I'll
work hard and do a good job. I read everything there is
to know about football on Wikipedia! |
 |
As tournament host, I cannot approve
of this! Don't you agree, Greece? |
 |
Hm? Whatever. Let's get this over
with. It's late and I'm getting tired. |
 |
*sighs* Very well. Since Thailand's
in no position to step in, I suppose we have no choice. |
 |
Aw, thanks! Just to be sure, this is
goal football and not touchdown football, right? |
Things do settle down, Germany glares a little at Sealand but starts the
match proper.
Germany starts off as the early aggressor, but Greece does move the ball well
when he gets it. He's mostly kicking it casually, unconcerned about actual
progress, so Germany gets it back before any damage is done.
 |
Germany approaches the box, eight
minutes in and it could be our first real test for
Greece's defense. Kicked to the edge of the box. There's
the shot! Keeper knocks it away but right back to
Germany! Oh, the defender steps in to block the
follow-up shot and get it clear! |
 |
Consider that a passing grade. Not an
A, but far from failure. |
 |
Greece moving the ball up, and boy is
he moving it up! Making quick progress down the pitch! |
 |
He didn't seem all that urgent, but
he's got a nice counterattack set up here! |
 |
Gets a shot off! Oh,
just off the crossbar! Germany gets it back. |
 |
Scary moment there. Seemed pretty
unassuming, but Greece strolled all the way down and
almost got a goal there. |
Amazingly, this becomes something of a pattern. Germany is a
well-oiled machine that does everything with purpose. Greece tends
to amble a little bit, and adds a certain unpredictability to his
game that Germany can't prepare for. While he doesn't threaten
Germany's defense much, Greece controls the ball for much of the
next five minutes.
 |
Greece again has the ball in his
attacking third, but doesn't seem to be looking inward. |
 |
Actually now he's going backwards,
away from the defenders. |
 |
Oh, now he's turning back up, down
the edge of the box. Looking for a cross? No, maybe not.
Pulls it back a bit and there's a pass in! Shot! Keeper
just gets a piece of it! Greece in with a header! GOAL!
GOAL! Greece lulls Germany to sleep and takes his first
lead of the tournament! |
 |
Lulled him is right! He looks like he
doesn't care whether or not he attacks in this
possession, quietly gets into position, keeps Germany
guessing and sets up a score! |
 |
Lulls the crowd considerably as well.
Let's see how well Germany responds. |
 |
Yeah, remember that Hungary scored
first back in the opener. Before she could blink he came
back with two. |

16' - GOAL (GRE) - Greece 1, Germany 0
Germany does respond by seizing control of the ball and persistently hunting
around the box. However, Greece has returned to his typical strategy- duck under
a shell of defenders and ride it out. Eventually Germany's attack peters out and
Greece gets it back. Again, he seems to kick it around aimlessly, then randomly
decides that he wants to play.
 |
Greece down the sides. Normally a
spot for a cross, but I don't know- |
 |
Nope. It's a cross. Strange one
though, curling out of the box. |
 |
Still a man there for Greece, heads
it up. Striker waiting in the box! Keeper goes out to
meet the threat! The shot! Past the keeper and FINDS THE
NET! 2-0!! |
 |
Wow, what happened to wake up
Greece?! That all looked arbitrary, but it gave him a
split-second window to get the perfect strike. Is it me
or is Germany scratching his head? |
 |
He's scratching his head all right.
Greece isn't doing anything fancy, but so far he's
keeping Germany guessing and has jumped out to a big
lead! |

21' - GOAL (GRE) - Greece 2, Germany 0
Germany's gameplan had revolved around assuming Greece would emphasize
defense and force him into mistakes. So far, Greece has been so indecisive about
whether to think offense or defense that Germany has always guessed wrong.
Germany assumes Greece will play defense with a 2-0 advantage, but his defenders
are still playing forward and looking to support the offense. They only retreat
when Germany gets the ball back.
Which gives him an idea.
 |
Battle at midfield here. Looks like
Germany has it. Hello! Deep ball way downfield! Past all
of Greece's defenders... to a wide open German! |
 |
Heh, too open. No way he's onside. |
 |
No flag up! Germany's alone in the
box! The shot! GOAL! |
 |
That can't be right! How can Germany
be onside when the ball's kicked but that open when it
arrives? If it looked like he gave a damn, Greece would
be having some serious words with our official. |
 |
No, look at the replay! He was on!
The Greek defense thought the pass was to a second
attacker farther back. They didn't see the actual target
sneak behind them and receive the pass until it was too
late. |
 |
Yep, I saw him onside when the ball
was kicked! Most people would assume it was offside, but
it was actually perfect timing and a little deception. |
Sealand is not adding to the commentary. He's talking to Germany.
Germany is irritated.
 |
Why are you telling me this? Of
course he was onside. I knew he was onside. I designed
it that way! |
 |
I was hoping Greece would complain
about it, so I could explain how I got that call right. |

24' - GOAL (GER) - Greece 2, Germany 1
Now that Germany is a little more situated, he's more likely to mark Greece
no matter what he's doing. Greece is still able to kick it to unexpected places,
so the next ten minutes or so is marked by a lot of midfield back-and-forth.
Germany does manage to break through again using a similar tactic, but Greece's
goalkeeper dives on the ball before a shot is made.
Other than that, nobody's having an easy time with possession.
 |
Greece down the sides, under pressure
from two German defenders. Boxed in now, looking for
something to do with it. |
 |
A cross is really the only thing to
do, and Germany's just not letting him. |
 |
He's going to try it anyway! It gets
through! Greece's striker is wide open! Ball bounces in
front of him and he taps it in! Another goal for Greece! |
 |
Germany's double-teaming backfires as
it leaves a man unmarked in the box! I don't know how
Greece got that cross off, but once he did it was a
foregone conclusion. This is something else. |
35' - GOAL (GRE) - Greece 3, Germany 1
Greece continues to enjoy increased possession as Germany hedges between
pressure and zone coverage. He also rushes back into his shell whenever Germany
takes over. After an attack fails, Germany's frustration is let loose on Greece
at midfield. Sealand rushes in with a a yellow card.
 |
That was a dangerous challenge. I
have to book you for that! |
Sealand's raised hand combined with the card itself is about at
Germany's eye level. Germany just stands there, forced to
acknowledge what is a very fair call. He's not sure what's more
humiliating- the score or being booked by a pint-size.
Nearing halftime, Germany finally gets a key steal.
 |
Stolen at midfield! Here comes
Germany! Trying to catch a rare numbers advantage
against Greece's defense. Up the middle! Finds a man!
Shot in the box! Leaping save by Greece! Oh, that was
huge! |
 |
Yeah, something tells me Germany's
going to be making a lot of adjustments in the locker
room. Greece has a two goal lead and really needs to
keep it that way going in. |
The halftime whistle comes soon afterwards. The crowd has been
hushed, Germany is beside himself, and Greece just shrugs and heads
in for a quick catnap before the second half.
 |
First games feature Germany looking
spot on and Greece looking totally hapless. Yet Greece
leads 3-1 at the half. Cuba, mate, what is going on?! |
 |
Germany plans meticulously for each
of his opponents based on observations and expectations.
Greece is known for his defense, and his lack of focus
did him in against Russia. So Germany plans around that
and draws up a strategy based on what he expects Greece
to do. |
 |
Only Greece isn't really playing with
a strategy today. He's just kicking it around, doing
what comes naturally and not really thinking too much.
And it's working! |
 |
It's working great! Germany can't
predict something that random. |
 |
And let's not forget that Greece is
very talented. Despite his performance against Russia,
he won Euro in 2004 and qualified for the World Cup in
2010. He's got natural ability, and he's really tapping
into it tonight. |
 |
Not that Germany won't come up with a
plan now that he's seen Greece in top form. Vietnam's
down there with him, so let's see what he's come up
with. |
 |
Germany, other than that one goal, it
was a hard half to stomach for you and your fans. How do
you get control of this game? |
 |
We have to start showing some
aggression on both offense and defense. Too often, I sat
back and set a trap for him, only to have him stumble around
and avoid it. It's now time to dictate the terms of the
game. |
 |
What is it that Greece has been doing
to move the ball so easily? |
 |
Unpredictability. I plan my defense
based on what an intelligent, goal-seeking footballer
would do. He is acting contrary to textbook football. |
 |
And beating you in the process. |
 |
We will see if that continues. |
 |
Good luck in the second half. |
Germany lives up to his words as the second half begins. He's far
more assertive with the ball, not only in his advancement, but also
controlling possession and disrupting Greece when he has the ball.
Still, Greece doesn't seem to notice, kicking it around, oblivious
to Germany's increased marking. He also gets into his shell and
plays outstanding defense whenever Germany threatens. While the next
ten minutes take place primarily in Greece's half, Germany never
really gets close to scoring.
 |
Germany up with the ball, but too
many defenders there! Greece knocks it back to the
goalkeeper. Quickly releases, off a defender's leg! Oh
no! Ball gets past the keeper into the net for an own
goal! |
 |
No! Disaster for Greece! Just when we
were starting to compliment a much-improved Greek
defense, another terrible, terrible miscue gets Germany
right back into this game! |
 |
This one was simply unforgiveable
too. Makes all the errors against Russia look like
child's play. The crowd is cheering, Greece looks
forlorn and I smell trouble a-brewing. |
54' - GOAL (GER) - Greece 3, Germany 2
Not sure if Greece is forlorn or just sleepy-eyed as always. Either way, you
know Germany's pouncing on the opportunity. Generally, Greece still does a good
job of evasion, but Germany's efforts are starting to pay off.
 |
Greece ambling around Germany's box,
looking for opportunities, but Germany is trying to get
into his face, preventing him from seeing anything. |
 |
Think I saw a couple, but Greece must
have missed them. |
 |
There's a cross into the box, but
Germany's there to collect it. Kicked up field. Through
ball to the half line to a speedy forward! He charges
up! Past the Greece defense! Dribbling half the length
of the pitch! Nobody's catching him! Into the box for a
shot! Keeper's ready and knocks it away! |
 |
Caught Greece napping again. It's not
a goal, but he's getting the crowd back into the game.
Greece is playing great, but Germany is really raising
the bar now. |
Indeed. Even though he appears to be idling around, just trying
to stay away from Germany, fact is that Greece is moving forward and
looking for another goal. He produces several shot opportunities,
but Germany's re-invigorated defense and keeper are not letting
anything past.
Likewise, Greece's penchant for defense is coming through as Germany hunts
for an equalizer. His attacks are stopped cold. Even when he gets a shot off,
it's not an ideal one and Greece's keeper refuse to give him a second chance at
it. This back and forth continues for ten minutes.
 |
Germany into Greek territory. Greece,
as always, defending with almost everybody. Kicked up,
but it's not a great touch and Greece takes over. |
 |
Whoa, suddenly he's moving. |
 |
Yes, Greece charging forward with an
aggressive counterattack! Where did this come from?!
Germany can't get back in time and Greece has a numbers
advantage! Into the box, takes a shot! Knocked away but
right to another Greek! He finishes the job! Greece gets
his goal back! |
 |
Wow, talk about unpredictable! Greece
hasn't really been using a counterattack at all this
half and just breaks it out randomly and seemingly for
the hell of it. It catches Germany off guard and regains
Greece his two goal lead! |
67' - GOAL (GRE) - Greece 4, Germany 2
Greece's unpredictability only extends so far. Four goals and a lead on
Germany suddenly appears to be more than adequate for a day's work. Greece
suddenly drops all pretenses of offense and plays exclusively for possession,
moving forward only to get the ball away from his goal and taking random
harmless shots because he might as well. Funny thing is, with twenty minutes
left, this would be considered 'textbook football' as Germany describes it, but
the abrupt change in focus catches Germany off guard and it takes about five
minutes for him to really threaten again.
He does, however, stealing the ball from Greece and getting a narrowly-missed
shot off before Greece can establish his defense. And he's just started.
 |
Greece really bunched up in the box,
while Germany looks for an opening. |
 |
All those players for Greece are
making it really hard for Germany to get a useful shot
off. |
 |
Germany rears back and fires it
anyway! Speculative shot from 20 yards out goes off
Greece and pops into the air! Greece is under it! Off
his head and NO! Oh, it's off the post! Greece collects
it and gets it the hell out of there but that was inches
away from a second own goal! |
 |
Way Greece is defending his box, the
only thing that can stop him is himself. At this rate,
that could be a pretty good fight. |
Greece plays keep ball when he can, but Germany is just
relentless, refusing to let Greece hang onto the ball for more than
a few touches. This is where Greece's defense earns its reputation.
 |
Germany kicking it around constantly!
|
 |
Jeez, I can barely follow the ball!
|
 |
Passed! Passed again! One more into
the box to an open man! Hard shot!! Caught by the
keeper! Smoking ball but somehow Greece hands onto it! |
Oh, Germany's not done.
 |
Germany sends it to the side! Open
for a cross! It's away! Gets off the header! No, a
diving save! |
Not by a longshot.
 |
Another open cross! It's away! Masses
lining up underneath it, but Germany with the header!
Off the post! Greece clears it away! |
With five minutes remaining, time is running out, but Germany
can't just loosely take shots. Greece's goal is far too secure for
that and that's not Germany's nature anyway. Nearing the final
minute, Greece gets the ball and moves forward a little bit before
Germany steals it back.
 |
At the half line, Germany lobs one
deep, almost to the box. Passed up, good angle and
someone's there to get it! |
 |
Hey, he's got an opening! Greece's
keeper goes out to play it. |
 |
Bad angle for him! Germany dives
forward and heads it past him! Into the net! It's a late
goal! |
 |
Man, Greece's defenders must have
figured it was over and just let him sneak that one by.
And what was that keeper thinking? Just a bad route to
the ball, left too much of the goal exposed. Germany
will punish you every time. |
 |
A miscue indeed, but those defenders
might be right. Just one minute left and Greece still
clings to a one goal lead. |

89' - GOAL (GER) - Greece 4, Germany 3
Indeed, Greece does his best to hold onto the ball and Germany's few
opportunities do not get past the defense.
 |
Can't be much left in stoppage time
now. Greece gets it, crosses midfield and there's the
whistle! He has done it! Greece has awoken, stunning
Germany and this partisan Dortmund crowd! The final
score- Greece 4, Germany 3! |
The crowd is silenced. Many would certainly be in tears if
Germans were capable of crying. As they shuffle out of the stadium,
Germany stares at the carnage and tries to put on a bold face. It
was difficult, given the impact of this. Advancing to the next round
was supposed to be a virtual certainty for the host. After the first
set of matches, it seemed like it. Now Germany knew his life in the
tournament hinged on one thing... the one thing he had never been
able to achieve in his lifetime...
Germany was going to have to conquer Russia.

Vietnam catches up with Greece, who may or may not know the consequences of
his actions.
 |
Greece, I spoke with you after your
loss to Russia and you seemed completely stunned by what
had happened. You look the same way now, but I imagine
it's for a completely different reason. Describe what's
going through your head right now. |
 |
Um... kinda sleepy. Maybe a little
hungry too. |
 |
What changed between that game and
this one? |
 |
Well, I said that I had to play
better and beat him. So I did. I played better... and I
beat him. |
 |
Given the defensive problems against
Russia and the fact that it was the first day of the
tournament, it seemed like a very high-profile
embarrassment. Did that motivate you to work harder for
this match? |
 |
Um... sure. |
 |
*leery*
Did you work harder for this match? |
 |
Not really. |
 |
Do you have any idea what you just
pulled off? |
 |
I guess I don't pay much attention to
stuff like getting back up after a loss or avoiding
elimination or playing the hosts. I just play football.
Guess I did okay today. |
 |
Okay only begins to describe it.
Whether you realize it or not, just an incredible win
today, Greece. Congratulations. |
She leaves Australia and Cuba to make some sense of the madness.
 |
Perhaps that is Greece's biggest
strength and his biggest weakness- he is oblivious to
the world around him. |
 |
He completely lost focus against
Russia in his first game. This time, that lack of focus
helped him tune out his critics, all of Germany's fans,
and at times, Germany's tactics. He played the game his
way, and got three huge points out of that. |
 |
And that is what it all boils down to
as we take a look at the updated standings: |

They close it out dissecting Group A heavily, but Belarus topping Group H is
still frightening.
 |
This result really, really opens up
an Olympus-sized door in Group A. We knew Greece was
talented, forgot about it, but now he reminds us and
makes for a three-way tie on top. Back at the draw we
pegged this as the Group of Death and now we see why. |
 |
Except nobody's dying! We thought
Greece was out of it, but he threw himself back in the
picture. This even opens the door for Hungary if she can
somehow get points against Russia tomorrow. Fact is, no
matter what happens tomorrow, Russia cannot clinch and
Hungary cannot be eliminated. |
 |
But a Russia win would almost
certainly hand him first in the group and Hungary's
chances of advancing would be slim to none. All eyes
will be on that one tomorrow afternoon in Hamburg. |
 |
Yes, they will. Meanwhile, Group B's
already upside-down thanks to Canada's upset win over
Japan. That scrappy Canuck will face Holland while Japan
looks to recover against Belgium. |
 |
That wraps things up on a momentous
day six, one which we will not soon forget. For Cuba,
this is Australia... g'nite, mates! |
As you could imagine, watching the real World Cup has made for some very
interesting parallels while writing this. In particular, I hadn't really paid
much attention to individual players before, but it's fun to see participants in this
World Cup have a presence in the real thing. Germany's Podolski and Greece's
Gekas and Katsouranis, all goal-scorers in tonight's match, have
figured prominently into their team's fates in South Africa.
Also, probably like most of you, I was stunned when Greece upset Germany
in the game, and wasn't sure how to write that, particularly after their first
games both here and in the real event (Germany destroyed Australia and Greece
stood idly in a loss to Korea). Then wonderful things happened- the hosts lost
badly (the country hosting the World Cup had reached the knockout stage every
single tournament and almost never loses a match), Greece's eyes snapped open
and won game two, while Germany caught some bad breaks and lost its match. Also
Switzerland beat Spain. No bearing on these matches but what the hell was up
with that?
And for the sake of continuity, this tournament takes place before the
FIFA World Cup actually began, but after qualifying. While I'll still make
vuvuzela jokes (and there's no way I'll be able to resist making fun of the goal
England gave America), just assume there's some other logic or prophesy at work.
After all, they had vuvuzelas at last year's Confederations Cup. It's just that
nobody paid attention to it. How else could America come that close to winning
it?
Finally, there's a similar color scheme and motif between the flags of
Sealand and Trinidad & Tobago. Since the Soca Warriors really did qualify for
the 2006 World Cup, even earning a draw with Sweden, they were the perfect mark
for Sealand's scheme.
To Be Continued!
